| School can’t discriminate against religious groups | |
| Chad Tuesday, August 28, 2012: 8:50 am | This week we were presented with information about W.R.E during school hours once a week for third and forth graders in MSD of Martinsville. W.R.E stands for Weekly Religious Education. As a person of faith, I was immediately pleased that our schools were offering religious education that was non-denominational. As I read further however, I discovered that this was not religious education at all. It was Bible study-teaching only about Jesus and the Bible. Immediately I was disappointed and confused! How is this possible that our schools can teach religious education and only educate on one religion? That is not an education! To be clear, we are Christians. But it is my job to be sure that my children know about Jesus and the Bible. Our schools should be preparing our children for the future of the world they live in. Despite all the missionary work, there will ALWAYS be different religions, faiths, and followings. What better way to teach our children about tolerance and peace than to give them an understanding of those, to open their minds to the diversity of our great country. Needless to say, our children will not be participating in this WRE program. But, I would LOVE for some of our non Christian, religious organizations to challenge our schools for time as well. And force this Weekly Religious Education to include ALL religions. I would definitely allow my children to participate in a program such as this! An heck, I would love to participate as well! Regarding the purpose of the article that I am commenting about, I am fully supportive of Ms. Poe's position. Our public schools cannot discriminate against which organizations are allowed to advertise during an Open House. Period. |
| Wolf gets probation, must register as sex offender | |
| Chad Thursday, August 16, 2012: 8:04 am | What they did was completely wrong on so many levels (especially bc of their position of authority), and they should be punished. But I do not believe they should be on the sex offenders list. Please explain to me why a 16 yr old who fires a weapon and does harm to another is tried and convicted as an adult, but a 16 yr old that has multiple sex partners with adult men is a victim. I'm sorry but this girl is no victim. She knew exactly what she was doing, as most 16 yr olds do. Young and stupid, yes. Victim, no. I hope she is getting the therapy she needs to become a responsible citizen of our community. |
