| Skip Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 12:53 pm | A Hoosier...no, no egoism here. I, like you, have no use for self righteous people nor do I think I have all the answers. I just think that too many of us tend to look for blame elsewhere rather than start with "Is there anything I could do to prevent this from happening again?" For instance, Lila has some very good and honest questions. I am unsure as to why some thigs happened the way they did. I know the first message from Dr Furniss said that if you have walkers in elementary school, feel free to keep them home. Every plan looks good on paper. It isn't until you implement that plan that you see how it really works. I have no doubts that the school system is reviewing it and seeing where they could do things better. By the way, I appreciate ALL the comments and dialogue mmy letter has generated, not just the ones that agree. This is how changes get made for the better. Let's hope dome of our leaders read these as well. |

| Skip Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 12:25 am | I'm not sure if it was aimed at me, Liberty, but I have never considered myself popular and have always viewed iconoclasm as a woefully misguided focus of attention. Perhaps you misunderstood me or perhaps you just wanted to make sure my letter was used to turn what happened Friday into a political statement. At any rate, there are good parents in Martinsville and I would never intentionally besmirch their efforts at parenting. My point was that people will look for somewhere to lay the blame for an incident such as this shooting. Some will incorrectly blame the school system. I was not coming to the defense of any teachers union or even the teachers, though some are friends of mine. I was simply speaking as a parent. Not everyone has a political axe to grind, even if you do. Some will say we need gun laws that are more strict. Again, this is an incorrect path as well. Gun laws will never stop criminals from being criminals because you cannot legislate morality. I have guns in my home. I do not have trigger locks or a gun safe. But I do not worry about my children finding and misusing them because I have taken the time to teach them to respect guns, not fear them. As far as my "secular humanist" comments, nothing could be further from the truth. My views that parents have the responsibilty to raise their children, not leave it to the schools, comes straight from Proverbs. In fact, anyone who studies their Bible can tell you that nowhere will you find God holding anyone but the parent responsible for the behavior and upbringing of their children. |
