HB 1005 addresses nepotism on govt. boards

My2Cents,
While I agree with the intent of HB 1005 to keep Town employees off the Town Council, I must set the record straight regarding your comments directed at Cook and Watkins. George Watkins volunteers his time to the fire and police departments in Mooresville and Morgan County. He does not collect any pay or bonus for the services he provides to several public agencies in Morgan County. Jeff Cook was not present at the meeting when bonuses were awarded. Therefore, he did not vote on this issue.

While we did reduce the number of streets paved and sidewalks repaired in 2011, several areas did still receive maintenance. We will also continue to perform maintenance on streets and sidewalks in 2012.

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think you should make a little more effort to get your facts correct before you attempt to public embarass good people who volunteer so much of their time to make Mooresville a better community. I supported the $750 bonus for all full time Town employees because we have not had adequate funding to give an annual cost-of-living increase in the past two years.

Ratcatcher,
The company would need to approach the Town to request any tax abatement concerns. To date, I have not reviewed any requests from this company for tax abatement. Thanks for your interest in local matters.

Liberty,
Let me assure you that I have no personal interest in this project. If I did, I would have obstained from the vote. The only point that was not made public during this meeting was the name of the company seeking to expand. All council members were made aware of all parties involved, prior to the meeting, so they could vote without concern for "conflict of interest". The motion that passed was to make funding available through the Town's food and beverage fund for the installation of infrastructure needed for the Company to expand. The motion was contingent on the company reaching agreement to purchase this property from the landowner (at which time the company's name will be public knowledge - unless they decide to release this information before this occurs.) The motion was also contingent on private funding being made available in support of the water infrastructure. This project was publically discussed before Council prior to this last meeting when the motion was heard. The public is always welcome to attend Council meetings and voice their concern. I attended both meetings in which this project was discussed and did not hear any public comments in support or against this project.

Brad,
The California trip was paid for in part through grant their teacher received. The students raised a portion of the funds and their parents paid the rest. As for me, I paid 100% of my own way to help chaperone the group. Regarding storm water rates, these had to be raised because the storm water department was under-funded and Mooresville has many storm water related issues that need to be addressed. And yes, I did vote for this increase. Hope this helps!
