M-ville parent: I would like to teach you about kinematics. Kinematics is a branch of dynamics that deal with aspects of motion apart from considerations of mass and force. Let's say you have a baseball team riding in the back of a truck, that truck is traveling the speed limit at 30mph. Another similar size vehicle is traveling the same speed and they hit head on. The combined speed is now 60mph (highway speed). The people in the bed of the truck are now being ejected at 60mph! Lets say that the truck carrying the team is traveling at 15mph and the other vehicle is traveling at 30mph (the speed limit). They crash, the combined speed is 45mph. Hitting the pavement at 45mph can be fatal. Remember the fall or ejection doesn't kill you, it's the sudden deceleration at the end that does. It doesn't take that much force to kill you when you strike your head against a dense object. Both vehicles can be traveling at 5mph thats all it takes.

Long time reader first time writer. I am a paramedic in Martinsville. I have been on several serious accidents in my 11 years of service, unfortunately some involving children. I have to say that I'm finally glad this issue has came to light. I have seen first hand children thrown from the bed of a pick up truck. Back in mid 2000's there was a truck heading out of town on 44, 6 occupants total, ranging in ages from 12 to 18. Three kids (12-16) were riding in the bed of the truck, when the vehicle swerved to avoid a deer the vehicle lost control and rolled, ejecting all but 1 occupant. I will never forget the sight of all those kids lying on the ground, especially the ones who were riding in the bed of the truck which received the worst injuries. I have also seen a child (6) who wasn't properly restrained in the back seat, ejected from the car when it rolled. This accident occurred at less than 30mph. Until you see these accidents for yourself and see the pain in these kids eyes you will never truly know how we feel as emergency workers. Every time I see a kid not restrained or riding in the bed of a pick up truck I remember that dreadful day on 44. It takes just one unattivitve driver to make a fun post game celebration into the worst day a parent could have. I will never forget the pain in the parents eyes when they found out that one of their children had died, especially in a preventable accident. I'm sure when Officer Richards wrote those tickets he probably had some of the same memories as me. All he could think about is saving 10 innocent children who didn't realize the danger that they were in. Please buckle your children up and never let them ride in the back of a truck. Hug you children and tell them how much you love them, you never know what could happen. It may be the last time you have with them.
