To the best of my knowledge there is no "Martinsville Fair". It is the Morgan County Fair.

The use of the present fairgrounds as a fairgrounds is not the "highest and best use" for that tract of land. What should the land be used for? The answer is obvious---additional specialized medical facilities! Think about it.
Plan would create bridge to Grand Valley

This proposal is utterly ridiculous!

A frontage road from the Mahalasville Road interchange to the S. R. 252 interchange will more than adequately handle the traffic in and out of Grand Valley and should be less expensive to construct than a bridge.

It could be that a 25 to 30 foot high sound barrier on the Martinsville side of I-69 will be required from the S. R. 39 interchange to the S. R. 44 overpass. This will eliminate pedestrians from "jumping the fence" at Grand Valley.

But, Whadda I Know? [Sometimes referred to as "the old white headed fart who was there when the Interstate program began in Indiana and was still there when the initial effort was completed".]

Perhaps the confidence in the school system by the parents, tax payers, and student body could be greatly increased if ALL employees of the school system, including the superintendent, superintendents staff and board members were subjected to a "background check" by an outside agency; Federal Bureau of Investigation, Indiana State Police, Morgan County Sheriff Dept., etc.

For the last several months the thought has kept coming to my mind--"Is the present location of the Morgan County Fair Grounds the highest and best use of that tract of land?" I keep coming up with, "No it isn't!" Perhaps the Morgan County Park Board and the Morgan County Fair Board should have a joint meeting to discuss the possibility of a county park/fairgrounds not located in an incorporated area of Morgan County. Thanks for jogging my memory MHS.1927.

"--Think about those businesses. Who will pay to build a road providing access to the Industrial Park and the Grand Valley shopping area from the east? Without one, all of those businesses (and one school) will have to close.--"

Interchanges and access roads, built as part of the I-69 project, have worked very well for the existing interstate system in Indiana. There's no reason it shouldn't work for I-69. We'll just have to wait and see how access will be provided when final construction plans are available.

Is this the frame house that sets west of the brick house that is visible from S. R. 67?

Also, wasn't there a school house located on the Bradford property? If there was one is it still standing?

Also, if my memory is correct, isn't there some sort of building standing south of the brick house, along the railroad tracks? It's been quite a long time since I have visited Bradford Woods, I may have my locations mixed up.

In any event it is great the building is being restored.

INDOT to Bloomington MPO: No I-69, no road money
Whadda I. Know
Sunday, October 16, 2011: 11:36 am
Since Bloomington and Monroe County are not in favor of the construction of I-69, I would recommend that I-69 through Monroe County be built with no over passes, under passes, and interchanges. This would greatly lessen the land acquisition, construction, and maintenance costs of I-69 through Bloomington and Monroe County!

This would also give someone the opportunity to build a large helicopter taxi service west of I-69 in order to transport students to the Indiana University Campus; one of the largest, if not the largest, industries in Monroe County.

I thought assessment/reassessment had been replaced by the fair market value appraisal approach. In Indiana the only persons who can prepare fair market value appraisals are persons who are licensed to do so by the Indiana Real Estate Commission. Are all of the persons doing the "reassessment" licensed real estate appraisers?

Merger will make Regional Cancer Center ‘even better’

Sunday, June 12, 2011: 1:16 pm
Yes, the Regional Cancer Center is a wonderful and professional facility. However, when a person is fighting for their life against Cancer and they are advised by their health insurance company that effective June 1, 2011, Morgan Hospital and Medical Center will no longer accept their health insurance company the facility might as well not exist.

I am in the process of fighting for my life against Cancer.

Prior to June 1, 2011, I had an outpatient surgical biopsy at the Cancer Center. The cost was $25,029.88.

Fortunately my radiation treatments ARE NOT being provided by the Cancer Center at the Morgan Hospital and Medical Center.

Welcome to Martinsville St. Francis Hospital. We look forward to your facility being opened as soon as possible. We are also looking forward to using your facilities in Mooresville.

Goodby Morgan Hospital and Medical!

Perhaps there will be some dramatic changes made at Indiana University Hospital Morgan after July 1, 2011. If that should happen we "might" consider using Indiana University Hospital Morgan again. (We've used the facilities of Morgan Hospital and Medical Center exclusively since 1962.)
Economy still affecting MHMC

Earlier this year I had an out-patient surgical biopsy at MHMC. The cost fell in the range of $25,000.00 to $30,000.00 (This range is correct--I did not make a typing error.)

A few days after the surgery I received a letter from my insurance company that effective June 1, 2011, MHMC will no longer accept my insurance company.

Hopefully July 1, 2011, Indiana University Health will eliminate the real problem since it is obvious that the present board of trustees and the county commissioners are not going to!

I'll be having a very serious and intense surgical procedure at Community East Hospital tomorrow, May 25, 2011.

Hopefully the present board of trustees will end up being replaced, since it's obvious the majority of the present board of trustees are all "yes people"! Also, hopefully, the new board of trustees will eliminate the Board of County Commissioners from having any control over the hospital!

Also, I have a question that is bugging me so badly that I have to ask --- Did Dr. Jones really retire by HIS choice or was he forced out? The association of my family and Dr. Jones goes back to his first day at the hospital!
Law bans tolls on new I-69

The original Interstate construction program in all of the states provided for 90% of the costs; design, land acquisition, and construction; to be paid with federal funds and the remaining costs, 10%, to be paid by the respective states. These percentages may have changed.

There was, and still may be, a provision that in the event any of the states converted any portion of an interstate route to a "toll road" that ALL federal funds would be returned to the federal government for that section of the Interstate route.

I decided in 2000 that I had enough of the "highway games" and retired!

What a great article; keep writing. My experiences at R. R. 1 Stafford Township were pretty much the same as far as my family were concerned; except for the year that Santa Claus didn't stop at our house. There was no crying, bitterness, etc., that's just the way the times were. I look on it today as a great learning experience.

I'm guessing that the year Santa Claus didn't stop at our house was probably the same year that any extra money that Mom and Dad had went into wiring our house for electricity and putting in "running water" in the kitchen; making life a whole lot easier especially for my Grandmother and Mother.

Also, I can't help but wonder; would a year without Santa Claus be a positive learning experience for the present generation of children and perhaps adults? (I'm just "wondering"; not looking for responses.)

Merry Christmas!

Is this the same skating rink where Henry Franklin Smith, Martinsville City Engineer and former county surveyor was murdered April 9, 1932?
The name of the skating rink where he was murdered was "the Crystal skating rink."
Henry Franklin Smith was the father of Evart "Doc", Wilbur "Wib", Alva "Cider", Mary Emily, William "Chub", and Joy.
Smith was found lying on the ground at the end of a walk leading from the rink. (Indianapolis News, April 11, 1932.)
