Pearl - I agree with you. There are positives and negatives about public schools, both here in Martinsville and in other cities. However, having grown up in the Martinsville Schools, I too have a list of names of those that were influential to me. In addition to the great teachers you've already listed, I'd like to add: Mrs Payne (retired), Mr. Gray (deceased), Mr Kuntz (deceased), Mrs Demotte, Mr. Miller, Mr. Lowe, and Mr. Myers.

I tried to take my kids to school this morning. The roads were the worst I've seen them all winter. School should have been cancelled from the start.

Lassiter - I agree. That's why I liked this article so much was because the writer told the story of the real St Nicholas. I wish the people posting to this column would not have gotten up on their soap boxes. It seems to me that this article is simply a warm story about the Christmas spirit and if one chooses to tell their kids about the fictional Santa Claus eventually the story of the real Saint Nicholas is a great story to tell.

Merry Christmas to all (including Liberty and Ratcatcher)! Even though you choose not to celebrate Christmas, I hope one day you receive the Christmas spirit. Try renting One Magic Christmas sometime, I think you'll enjoy it.

If you don't LIE to your kids in the first place you won't have to tell them Santa doesn't exist later on. I have never participated in or condoned this practice and never will. You can all commence with berating me now.

So does this mean that you are always honest to everyone, children and adults, even when the LIE is harmless? Do you really feel better about yourself by killing children's fantasies of Santa Claus? Do you kick puppies in the face for fun just to teach them to get used to disappointment? Do you tell older people they're too slow? Do you tell toddlers their finger paintings suck too? Or do you tell them that they are wonderful like the rest of us in the human race.

I choose to let kids believe in more than the day to day world, because eventually they'll find out about reality. Fantasy, including Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, are what make childhood magical. I choose to let them have dreams and fantasies. I'll let you be the killjoy.

It's so hard to figure out when to tell your kids about Santa. What better way than to tell your kids about it than this way with such a positive message. The Christmas season has become so commercial, but this column brings back what's important, what so many of us have forgotten over the years. This columnist is an amazing writer. We need to see more from her!
