Maybe you don't know what the school board members look like. There are two that I know of myself that go to 90% of the school fuctions. One even travels out of town when our students are participating in an activity. Also, it has been talked about at several school board meetings about having 7th and 8th grades in a building together, and 5th and 6th grades in another building. As of yet, I have not seem any of the candidates at a school board meeting, only Mr. Wilson when he was ranting and raving over Mr. Wolf...

I agree with whoever said we should know more about the ones running for school board. I can only comment about one who has been a very close friend for 35+ years. That is Charlie "Butch" Sampson. I have know him since he was a salesman here at the Sears store on the square. He is a very caring and HONEST man. He has had 2 children go thru our school system and 4 grandchildren. He would do anything to help others. He has been involved in the community for years, infact you will see him at almost every school function, from athletic events to open houses at the schools. He has done this for years, even before being on the school board. He truly cares about the kids here in Martinsville. He is definitely not one of the "good old boys" and he is always available if anyone wants to talk to him. Everyone needs to open their eyes and see what a good person we already have on the board....

Don't know who the coaches were but wondering if they also coach in junior football. Will this carryover to allowing them to coach a football team. Just can't imagine what could have gone so badly they felt the need to confront the umpire the way they did. Also, why are they playing until 12:00 midnight? Even though school is out for the kids, don't parents have to go to work and what about the folks that live down by the ballfields. It seems a lot of bad decisions were made that night.

Have you asked a school board member if they knew that the girl had a key to his office or used it as her personal dressing room? I think you might be surprised what was actually shared with them or should I say NOT. I have asked these questions of a couple of them that I know and this was news to them. I'm not sure that the information always trickles down. Just an FYI for you. Were you also aware of the rumors about the tennis coach? How did your daughter feel about playing for him? Did you ever approach him about it? Just wondering.

What was the reason the law enforcement gave for not doing more? I guess I'm wondering why you are so against the school board and not more angry at the people of authority who you reported this to and who did nothing. I'm under the understanding that it was because nothing concrete was given. Everyone heard the rumors but had nothing in pictures (and if they did have not shown them). Also understand the girl in guestion denied anything inappropriate. I guess I'm failing to see why you think the school board could have done more when the local police force couldn't. This is an awful, awful thing to happen but I'm also not convinced that the parents didn't know something was going on and did nothing to help their daughter. What a life she has led.

Spanky, since I now know who you are and you have been so vocal against the school board . . . just wondering if you or your wife ever spoke out about the rumors you heard about the girl and the incidents with Coach Wolf and Coach McGown? I know that your daughter plays on the tennis team and probably heard many things and shared them with you. I also know that in your place of employment it would be very easy to voice your concerns to others. Just interested in knowing if you shared the rumors you heard with anyone of authority??

From what I've read and heard most people want to say get rid of everyone and start over. Well not everyone "turned a blind eye" as you put it. The fact is (read the latest article in the paper) there were rumors and they could not be substantiated and now they have been and charges have been filed. I'd say that is a good start and maybe more will come out and maybe it won't. Just make sure you know everything before you start lumping those involved in the "clean up" in the same pot.

I agree that rumors need to be investigated but when the girl and the coach say nothing is happening (and they did) what do you do next? Can you fire the coach after that? I don't think so but unfortunately we all have seen how that played out. I do think that all rumors involving students need to be investigated but I'm also smart enough to know that you can't fire someone based on rumor alone. I also wonder if anything will come out about the parents of this girl. Did they not know any of this was going on? If half of the town knew how did they not know?? And if they did know, why did they not protect their daughter? Lots of questions but no good answers.

I also have a student at the high school who heard the same rumors. I also have heard rumors as well as most everyone I know. The thing is that I never have seen anything with my own two eyes or have any physical proof and people you have to have that to charge someone with a crime or to remove them from a position. I can look around at ballgames, school events and other places in town and think to myself how funny that I have heard a rumor about most everyone I see. But it is still a rumor and I have to keep that in perspective. Some of the very parents and people making comments and wanting a lot of people fired (i.e., teachers, administrators, school board) shouldn't be talking the talk because they can't walk the walk so to speak. I'm not condoning anything that has happened but I'm willing to see how the investigation plays out and let the legal system do its job. I for one think the school board is taking the matter seriously and taking the necessary steps to make things better. I was at the last school board meeting where everyone was shouting and carrying on and acting like we live in a third world coutnry and I was SHOCKED that some of the very same people that stood up and spoke, should have gone home and looked in their mirror because their judgment needed to start there. I can honestly say that I love the town of Martinsville and most of the people in it but when bad things happen people start to point fingers instead of working to make things better. I'll get off my soapbox now but come on people quit fueling the fire and remember we don't live in glass houses.
