After-school gatherings concern Central neighbors

My son asks to play at Central almost everyday when we are passing by to go home. It hurts me to tell him no all of the time because I fear the number of teenagers that are there and what they will teach my children. We stopped once and there was underage smoking, more curse words than I have heard in a year, and indecent behavior. It is sad that I cannot take my children to play there. The school playgrounds have always been in better shape than the park playgrounds.

Tomcatt68...It is not the age of kids that matters. It is the homelife that makes a difference. While this may not be true for ALL kids, West generally does have more students from homes that may not be as "blessed" as many of the homes from East. This is not just money, but also parent involvement and available resources.

I think you are wrong. School personnel did all that they could. There will be no sweeping away of the tragedy. This has affected EVERYONE in the school system and city.

Schools have "early intervention" for a reason. They target the young to get them on track before it is too late. Full day kindergarten would be another intervention. I have seen first hand the benefits of full day kindergarten. It would be a blessing for our students.

Teachers actually work 184 days for the school. And you are right...if you are unhappy with your job...you move on. I love my teaching job with all of it's ups and downs! And yes, I am on the bottom of the payscale.

I teach full time. I have a second job on the side. My husband works full time and does odd jobs on the side. We have two beautiful children and a small but decent house. It has never been about the money for me and most of the teachers I know. We work hard, put in the hours, and love our students (even the ones who bite, kick, and hit us). Maybe it is time for the people against public education to come into the classroom and fill our shoes for a week and see what they think of class size, individual needs, and the demands of testing. And while we "get paid" over the summer...it is because they make us stretch our salary out over the entire year. They are not just giving us extra money. If we did not get paid over the summer our paychecks would be just a little bit bigger over the course of the school year. So however you look at it, we have a base salary that we get paid...just like any other job in America.
