Artesians jump up as IHSAA adds sixth football class

Boy did the title of this story fool me. I thought the Artesians jumped up to Division 6 after reading the title. Martinsville is a big enough school to compete with anyone. In the late 70's and early 80's they for sure did...I can think of two games where the Artesians battled to the end to teams that won the State Championship in the biggest division in the State. One was Carmel and the other was Castle....maybe they should just compete with schools that don't start with "C". Ok that is a bit silly, but I don't find the size of the school to be the problem. The Artesians finished the regular season start strong last year and let's hope they keep that momentum into the 2012 season.

Teachers face felony charges

This story is terrible, but some folks seem to want to pile on Martinsville. Every place has their faults and exactly how many teachers work in the Martinsville school district? There are some excellent educators in the system. How many times has Martinsville been at the top of the state in the Academic Decathlons? Over the years I have seen articles about the achievements of those teams coached by Wayne Babbitt, and just yesterday I saw two students are going to the Nationals in Deca competition. This is a tight knit community that can pull together. I remember traveling to football games as a youngster and the Artesian fans out numbered the home fans often. I have read reports that Glenn Curtis Memorial gym would sometimes sell out when the gym had more seats than the population of the town. I can think of a lot worse places to raise a child that is for sure.

sampson Thursday, May 10, 2012: 6:54 pm	I cannot believe the age of consent in Indiana is 16. So it would have been ok if they were not school employees or persons in positions of trust? Sad story for sure. Part of being a man is making good decisions. I can totally see a guy 65 being flattered that a pretty 16 year old is giving him attention....however at the end of the day he has to make the right decision.

I don't really want to take sides. I don't know anyone involved, so maybe I can be a bit impartial. Often in companies when and employee has put in some time, the companies allow the person to make restitution without charging the employee. I don't know if this is good or not, but I am sure that people in decision making positions think things through. When someone embezzles, generally it is for some type of addiction...lottery...drugs...etc. etc...and the person maybe had done it before, but paid it back...then took some more and at some point it got out of control. The person probably was relieved when she was caught. If you have not been through this, you may not want to believe it or you may not understand. I've seen people embezzle for baseball cards, prostitutes, drug addiction, and gambling problems. It becomes an illness. None of this makes it right, but just wanted offer something without name calling. Wish everyone the best in the future.
