Daniels: Teachers should consider a pay freeze
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Lassiter Wednesday, February 17, 2010: 7:25 pm More from Lassiter | This really isn't about education. Its about specific workers feeling they are priveleged above all other workers. Some feel they deserve more than others and should not have to suffer like everyone else does in hard times. This is NOT what has made our country the greatest country on earth. What made us great is getting the job done and done right no matter what, without wasting time complaining. |

I think you may need a little Reality Check, Reality Check. First the shutting down of the Government run schools is a good Idea but " all that money " would be able to go to the government because state law requires if to go to school systems around the state. The money would go to fund charter schools and school vouchers for private schools. I do like your Idea if a parent wants to make the sacrifice for their child and teach them at home that would be great. That is very realistic. Since the government schools is just one of many ways of and education for your child I can see you wanting to pick something other than the worst for them but the fire and police are a little different so maybe you may want to reconsider that. You really should study the Constitution as a whole and not just the Second Amendment because in America we have the right to as many political party's as we want , even if they serve tea. I see your a Hannity fan but I haven't seen any DVD's of him. Please let me know where I can find one. He really aggravates my wife with his straight up in your liberal face approach and I can use it as a gag gift. You do have some good ideas but your a little to radical for me on some. |

| A Hoosier Wednesday, February 17, 2010: 10:37 pm More from A Hoosier | When I visited the statehouse a couple of weeks ago, Becky Skillman's chief of staff told the touring group this little stat. You can probably send an email that would give you the exact numbers. |
| Reality Check Wednesday, February 17, 2010: 10:43 pm More from Reality Check | Oh, well if Becky (I didn't know the LT Govenor cast the deciding vote if there is a tie in the Senate) Skillman's staffer told you that it must be true. PAt Bauer's group leader told me that he used to workout at Gold's Gym. There are "some" retired teachers and ex-teachers in the StateHouse, but not half of the 150, I can promise you that. For example, there are many businessmen and lots of attorneys. If 50% of the General Assembly were teachers, I can assure you that 5,000 would not be losing their jobs this May, which is exactly what "could" happen if districts lay them off. That would be great for the economy, wouldn't it? |
| Reality Check Wednesday, February 17, 2010: 10:55 pm More from Reality Check | If you were a teacher, you would know that this is everything to do with education. Do you read any articles here about teachers demanding pay raises? Lower health costs? More money for the classrooms? Less work in re-licensure? NO, you don't. If you did, I would be the first to jump in (as I am now) I can speak for myself. And, I will. I would be more then happy to take the same pay freeze the Governor is willing to take and all 150 members of the General Assembly. Surely, they too feel compelled to "share" in this poor economy? Also, when Daniels says "state employees" have all taken cuts - do they all have BA's, MA's and PH'D's? I think not. You're comparing apples and oranges. Anybody who goes into teaching already sacrifices beyond the call of duty. We are lucky anyone with any bit of life in them even decides to go into the (dare I say?) profession. To demonize ALL teachers is self-depricating and quite stunning to witness on here. And, I have witnessed much from the same couple of continuous and myopic voices that are ALWAYS on here. BUT, that's what make this country great, right? You get to do that? You get to come on here and state your opinions (or "facts" that some like to say). Unless you've taught, you couldn't begin to know what is going on. Same for military folks, doctors, business folks, etc. I would never get on here and chastize a group or profession or task that I have NEVER been a part of. Maybe if parents, students, teachers and communities would pull together, Lassiter, more students, teachers and parents would achieve greater results? Of course, it is easier to stir the pot and blame one group and throw stones. It worked in Germany and it's working here, right now on both sides of the political aisles. |
| Reality Check Wednesday, February 17, 2010: 11:02 pm More from Reality Check | Liberty, charter schools have ZERO results better than public schools. I have spent the better part of 5 years working on research comparing the idea. Charter school results have come down to this conclusion: They do no better or no worse then public schools. I have no problem with giving you a tax credit to send your kids to another school. I also have no problem with charter schools or private schools. However, pulling public funds to pay for them is another story. Especially when you do not hold them to the same mandates. If I had 15 students, with 100% parental involvement and ZERO (yes, I said it) special ed kids, I would have 100% passing on ISTEP and all of my students would excel. The reality of that is what you encourage: Now, what would you do with the other 75% (those middle of the road kids; special ed kids; EH kids; 504 kids; poverty kids; etc. etc.???) This is the Reality. What your proposing is not and home schooling all of the kids in America is not. If you look at the history of public schools, they have done their job. The job has gotten bigger and the times have gotten worse. Less money, more mandates, not discipline, no parenting, no support = bad public realationship to public schools. Just my thoughts with some experience and lots of research. BUT, judging from your reflexive action on here, I'm sure you're waiting to pounce on my jugglar. |

I'de say that statement proves my point
You are correct. Now lets suck it up and work within our means.
Among other things. I hope you stick around so there will be a few continuous and myopic voices. :) |
| A Hoosier Thursday, February 18, 2010: 12:30 am More from A Hoosier | Dear Reality Check, have you taken your meds today? You seem alittle high strung. I'm not sure if your teacher did an appropriate job with your education. Who said anything about 'half'? If you will go back and recheck my post you will see that I stated there were more teachers in Indiana legislation than there were attorneys. Before you start attacking folks I STRONGLY suggest that you get your facts straight. Breathe! |

May goodness, I thought you were trying to come up with some good ideas about education ( a little radical but in a good hearted way ) but it appears you are a BID UNION PROPAGANDA TOTING GEC TEACHER. So, I will address you as one. Your Jugular is your body part and nobody can tell you what to do with your own body. I will however take the Liberty do speak from my position. Dear Miss Reality Check, As your employer I am appalled at your hate and disrespect towards your boss, parents, special ed children,EH kids, 504 kids, poverty kids. You must have thought your union would protect you and they may have given you a false sense of security but let me set the record straight. You are now relieved of your duty my dear. Yes you are fired. Pack your books and don't show back-up in your school building tomorrow or I will have you locked up for trespassing on taxpayer soil. You can take all the things you hate so much about your job we graced you with and buy soup with them. We will no longer have to hear your complaining voice. Now to correct your propaganda about charter schools that you as a filth supporting UNION operative hate. It may be because the filthy Union you support would have no control over them like you do over the politician run GEC's. You also no longer will have the social control over the child's mind. Once that happens you will melt like someone splashed water on you. I can hear you hissing . Stop it and Shut-up and listen. The Charter schools are endorsed by everyone but the Child destroying BUG UNION you pay to do your dirty deeds. Only when judged equal, you will find that measurement taken on a group of GEC children already messed up by you my ex-employee. Not from day one were they really shine just like private schools. Obama endorsed them if you masters opinion matters. Yes charter schools will have to educate the same children you used to but since your BIG PERVERT SUPPORTING UNION prevented you from being paid on your class room grades we had to design a way of measuring your skills and so came the mandate of ISTEP. Since the charter schools will be paid by performance these mandates will no longer be necessary. You came into my office and have nothing but complain about the government system of education and all the waste and obsticals it has placed in your way but then you refuse to let our children out of the prison and have a better educational opportunity just because of the financial claws you and your BIG UNION will have plucked out one by one. Money doesn't educate children. New buildings don't educate children. Good teachers who care more about the child than the perverted causes of a BIG UNION, thats who educates. Teachers who are of a moral fabric that would prevent them from supporting the immoral and perversion they pay the BIG UNIONS to advocate, thats who educate. Real text books with real history educates not the rewritten crap your socialist BIG UNION promotes. Moral standards and discipline educate, not the pot smoking liberals fellow UNION operative ex-associates you once had. The government system with all its waste and regulations, that you once worked for, could never provide the flexible and creativity a private company can provide. All at a minimum of a 20-25 % lower cost to the tax payers and the charter school companies are responsible for their own buildings and real estate. You know something. You are really a minority amoung teachers these days. The smart ones who have stepped back and seen the results of the system you once belonged are now , at least privately , taking a second look at the affect it has had on the past generations ( yes it's responsible for those parents you hate too ). The good ones will still teach. Rather it's at a Charter based system or a voucher authorized private school. They will teach. The bad ones with an attitude will stand with you in the soup line. It's time to make a change. That's what you voted for right. Regards, The Taxpayer Your ex boss |

Keep talking, Reality Check. You continue to make our points for us. It would be just as bad for our economy if 5,000 healthcare workers lose their jobs or 5,000 snowplow drivers or 5,000 grave diggers. WHY ARE TEACHERS SO DARNED SPECIAL IN YOUR EYES? (You must be one.) Think about the stinky mess we would all have if my little scenario played out. |
| Ratcatcher Thursday, February 18, 2010: 8:26 am More from Ratcatcher | RC - You might not get on here and chastize another profession but your holier- than-thou attitude about YOUR profession is not helping you to make your case. And just exactly what is it you sacrifice to work as a teacher? You never have to work nights, weekends or holidays and you get your summers off and still make a decent annual salary. You have a strong union and plenty of lobbyist fighting for you. I wish I had a sweet deal like that. Try working in a busy hospital that never closes on your feet for 12 straight hours with no lunch break and then come on here and complain about your working conditions. How many times have you had to watch an innocent child bleed out and die in your classroom? How many times have you been exposed to HIV, Hepatitis, and a litany of other communicable diseases while standing at your chalkboard? Even the editor of this paper has it worse than you do with breaking news, deadlines, making sure the facts are right, keeping advertisers happy and always having someone mad at him because they didn't like what was said about them on the comment board or how they were portrayed in the paper. If you don't like what you do then stop wasting your time on here complaining, quit and go learn how to do something else. That's what I did many years ago. Now I make about half what I used to and I'm a much happier person. |
