Another WOW story. Could it be that the prison system rehabilitated this man? Or is this God's work? Or both?

I applaude Judge Craney for her humanitarian effort.

Prisons aren't in the business of reforming anyone. This was definitely a God thing. I trust Judge Craney to do the right thing. She is one of the good ones down there.

Change can happen anywhere, when someone decides to give up fixing themselves and turns to God. This is the most difficult decision most of us will ever make because we have been programmed to "be the man", to take charge, and be in control. God's way is for us to get out of our own way and admit we are powerless to change ourselves.

Nobody knows what was and is in the heart of this man. We can only see the resulting actions. His words don't mean much. I would rather rely on those who have observed him.

My heart goes out to the victim's family. I hope that they can come to the place of forgiving him. If they don't, they will slowly be eaten by long-term unresolved grief and they will be the ones lost for eternity. If he is repentant and God has covered his sins, he will enjoy the eternal peace and rest.

Wow...so I guess I'm gonna be the bad guy here. It doesn't matter what kind of "change" this guy has went through. He did it. He admitted to it. He should serve the full 40 in my opinion. He should be thankful our justice system is as messed up as it is and he has chance to get out in 20 years.

I too hope the judge does the right thing, and sends him back to jail to finish out his sentence.

change is easy when you have no choice and your back is against the wall that doesnt mean he wont go back to the same arse when he gets out and has more freedom to make wrong decisions, he should serve his time period

Our judicial system is designed with flexibility to make adjustments to sentences, grant paroles, send offenders to alternative facilities, modify sentences and more. Once you take away these flexibilities, you can just do away with judges altogether and set inflexible sentences for each offense. The result would be a mushrooming of our prison system, funded by taxpayers. The U.S. incarceration rate on December 31, 2008 was 754 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents. The USA has the highest total documented prison and jail population in the world.

I thank God that we didn't condemn us to Hell for sinning. He provided a way to cover those sins. He also didn't develop a heirarchy of sins and draw a line saying some will be covered and some won't (with one exception). He said, "thou shall not murder", but He didn't say, "if you do, you are a throw-away and not a candidate for my mercy. Who are we to offer less?

Yes. Do not know the late wifes family but can't blame them for not forgiving. he shot their daughter with their grandkids in the house. Saw him the day before and he was a mess but didn't act like he was gonna do something stupid like that.

Agree with Ratcatcher, Judge Craney is a better judge of that than I.

Perfectworld. I don't think you know where some of us are coming from on this. It isn't that it is a "good idea" to forgive one another, it is required if you are a Christian. It is such a strong commandment that God says if we cannot forgive, He won't forgive us.

It is a terribly difficult thing to forgive someone of such an act as the one in this story, but we must. Moreover, by holding on to hate for someone we hold against them their actions, we ourselve are a murderer in God's eyes. "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15.

On another level, the victim's family can't get past grieving in a situation like this if they don't forgive. That is injurious to their mental health as well. Their contempt and hatred of the man will eat away at them and they will be in a constant reminder of the events and focus on "their loss".

I know it sounds like "touch-feely" mushy love everybody and it runs against the grain of our culture today that urges us to focus on ourselves, but for the Christian, we either believe what God told us to do (not just the parts with which we believe) and we act on that belief in accordance with His instruction manual, or we are Christians in name only and God will spit us out of His mouth.

Isn't this a mess up world that we live in (YOU) have to go to jail or prison to find God there! Don't that stink! Why not try to find God before you get to that place? I though thats why we have all these Churches around here for so we could go and find God there. I say take down all these churches and we all go to jail thats were God is waiting on us at. LOL.. Make him do all this time.

Oh Dee....You don't have to go to prison to find God, and the large majority of us did not find him there. But people do cry out to God when they are at the end of their rope. Of course, like you, I wish people would start their journey early with God and at a time when their life was not in the tank (no pun intended). But the fact is, many don't see a need for God as long as life is good.

People cry out to God and admit their powerlessness in times of marital difficulty, job loss, illness, and many other of life's speed bumps. I don't think God minds that. The Bible says to give thanks in all situations, not just for blessings. That means thanking Him for actions like murder. The reason is that it may take that extreme action to get a man's attention.

I work some with addicts. Many times I have heard someone say, "I thank God that my parents threw me out of the house and told me to go sleep under a bridge." or
"I thank God that I was homeless, otherwise I might have never cried out to Him"

God can use every situation.
