Ron Furniss has been a credit to our community and our School system... He has always, to my experience, been a thoughtful and a positive leader. He has made a mistake. He knows that.
Let's back off the feeding frenzy a bit.

Why do we as a community always want to define someone by the worst mistake they've ever made? I'm not condoning what he did, it was stupid and I am sure he knows it. He will be punished accordingly for the crime commited, as he should be. Why do we need more? So he's not perfect, guess what - nobody is.

I don't see how this compromises his effectiveness. If a teacher or student shows up drunk to school, there are rules set on how to deal with it. He'll follow those set rules just the same now as he would if he'd never been arrested.

One stupid mistake shouldnt define a person.

I don't think you can compare the "honor" student that showed up at prom drunk with what Mr. Furniss did. I don't think her being an honor student makes any difference in whether she should be allowed to walk at graduation. She knowingly showed up at a school function with school officials present in an intoxicated state under the age of 21. It's not hard to figure out why she was suspended and not allowed to participate in graduation. Mr. Furniss is a grown man over the age of 21 and is allowed to have a drink if he wants to. Yes, he should have known better than drink and drive since it is against the law when you are over the legal limit and I'm sure he is constantly questioning why he did it. Should the man lose his job over it? People remember, you don't live in a glass house so don't throw a stone.

Has anybody been to a teachers party ? retirement or birthday ?

It's the biggest bunch of druggies to be found. The drinking and language is very disappointing to any student who looked up to them in a class room.

So a student shows up at a student party drunk and she was suspended and not allowed to participate in graduation ? What ?

But, a superintendent caught very drunk inside school property and he presides over the graduation the hypocrites kicked her out of ? ? ? ?

Alcohol is THE NUMBER ONE KILLING DRUG IN THE WORLD. More people are addicted and die due to that drug than any other drug their is.

Now anybody qualified to teach a child must first understand that they don't give a crap about the law. In their minds the laws were created by right and wrong. They are not emotionally capable to distinguish the difference between what morals adults have tried to re-write and logical truth. I only have 10 years of working and teaching 7-12 graders outside of raising my own and I can tell you that is as pure of a fact as it comes. Thats also the age group that a child develops their base convictions in life. People wonder why young people do drugs ? Because the adults roll models they aspire to be like, do drugs. There is no rocket science about this. Besides even rocket science can be easily explained by a competent person.

Young people haven't the conceptual ability to classify a drug as good or not. If it gets you high it's a drug. Legal ? what is legal ? I have to hide it anyway. Just like they try to hide it from us. What's it matter may parents take care of me and they do drugs. Right ? Children don't live in a world of being responsible for their own existence yet. They are invincible. Age isn't something they grasp as restrictive.

So to all those who aspire to become real qualified teachers I charge you to lead a life worthy of the leadership position you aspire to, at both home and school. In both what you do and the language you use. They know who you are and what you say and do. If you can't accept that as a prerequisite job requirement for which we pay you then you are the last person who should be allowed around our children.

As for the head leader superintendent. Well that go's 100 fold. He agrees. It's what he agreed to in his contract.

What disqualifies so many teachers on here is their concern is first for some guys job and not about the children. This is what they pay the unions for.

So when you see a teenager smoking, drinking and cussing you can bet your money some of their teachers smoke, drink and cuss. The teacher will blame their old student they taught and thats the parent. But their lack of irresponsibility dictates that. Now not all teachers lack this required character and we know who they are and we honor them. But get your notebooks out children and take note of the ones who do.

I like most know someone in school who was drinking or? and was killed in a car wreck as a teenager. Sometimes a whole car load of some teachers students are killed.

Any job that's children centric like teachers or supers shouldn't be the hardest to fire, rather; they should be the easiest fire. And in some cases on the spot. Of coarse it's all how you value a child. Using simple logic my guess would be those who voted for the " obamaborter " probably will more than dis-agree with my post. You'll see. Have you got your note books out yet ?

The hell if we ALL don't live in glass houses! It's just a matter of time and/or a question of "when" the feeding frenzy will begin for each and every one of us because we ALL have the potential to do something that we shouldn't do or to be wrongly accused of something! It just depends on the timing and who is interested and why at that specific time. It's a crap shoot and a crock of crap at the same time!

The student involved in the prom incident has an excuse of sorts - she was an immature, dumb a$$ CHILD who should have known better but used poor judgment - probably due to peer pressure! (NOT that that makes it OK!) Mr. Furniss, on the other hand, has chosen a career for himself in which it is of the utmost importance not just to PRETEND TO BE a good role model only when people are watching but to ACTUALLY BE a positive role model to the students of the schools he oversees. In my opinion, he's obviously been pretending all this time, but he has finally slipped up so that his true colors are showing. There are just some things in life that you just don't get a 2nd chance at. And mistakes and crimes of people like him that set poor examples for youth are NOT tolerable or allowed and SHOULD NOT be excused! I DO NOT want a drunk driver in charge of our school system! If he used poor judgment with something so simple, why would anyone want to give him authority to use his judgment on issues involving our kids?

Thanks, Sunshine. It's good to see people who care about children. What's amazing is you seldom find them in the GEC employment. I know some but they seem to be in the minority.

For the record in my late twenties I voted for Jimmy Carter.

Thanks Again

Was he driving his school-owned take home vehicle?

The deputy detected the odor of alcohol coming from Furniss and gave him the standard field tests for sobriety. Furniss, who was driving a vehicle registered to the school system, failed all three tests, the deputy said. He was given a chemical test and registered a .16 percent BAC, which is twice the legal limit.

Yea...Totally agreed. He's in a school owned vehicle drunk. Driving. For one thing the obvious, drinking and driving is bad, duh. We area all aware of that. But that's just like the teenagers at prom, drunk in the school affiliations. What's the difference, well as Sunshine said, Child vs. grown man. It's not that hard to figure out, he's an idiot. He fortunately didn't hurt anybody on the roads. But who's to say if he get's a slap on the hand, it won't happen again and worse happen. Let's be realistic people! Not to mention, he's probably done this before. We know that Blue Bluff is a quick way from northern part into town. He's not stupid. He knew what he was doing driving that road. Fortunately the cop got him and took him in.
