Downey inspired to seek county sheriff post
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Planter Tuesday, March 30, 2010: 8:18 pm More from Planter | Downey is the best choice. The first time I met Deputy Downey he was the responding officer on a fender bender accident. I was most impressed with his level of professionalism. |
| downtown customer Tuesday, March 30, 2010: 8:41 pm More from downtown customer | If you are like your Grandfather Marvin Skaggs you will make a good sheriff. |
| EYE IN THE SKY Tuesday, March 30, 2010: 8:43 pm More from EYE IN THE SKY | Planter, I would have to disagree. First of all it must have been an election year for you to have someone show up! So suprised they did not just "call" you on the phone. And after the last 8 years I would have to say that Mr. Ringer will turn that place around. He is what that sheriff's Department needs. Mr. Ringer I did not vote for you last time and I will not make the same mistake twice! |
| Themanishere Wednesday, March 31, 2010: 11:06 am More from Themanishere | Eye in the sky, If you were truelly an eye in the sky you would see the Sheriffs Department is just like any other budget and it is getting chopped. So why take a deputy out of service that is 15 mins away for a minor call when he can stay centralized and be ready for a real emergency. Aka a drunk beating his wife, a child getting abused, your family member trapped in a car that has wrecked or caught fire. Take things like that into consideration. Plus its saving the tax payers money by them not having to run balls to the wall to get to you and burning there limited supply of money up on fuel. Just food for thought. I will agree though that some officers, "including Mr Ringer" abuse the power of being able to just take a complaint over the phone. But most of the ones that are takien of the phone are legit and is saving you money or being free in case your other family or friends need emergency help. Downey for Sheriff, Manley for Trustee!! |
| Themanishere Wednesday, March 31, 2010: 11:08 am More from Themanishere | Also Sheriff Garner thank you for turning the Department around and always having a open door!! A Job well done and a great 8 years!!! |
| EYE IN THE SKY Wednesday, March 31, 2010: 2:39 pm More from EYE IN THE SKY | Themanishere, Look what has gone on in our so called sheriff's dept. and you call that a great 8 years. I feel like knowing what all has gone on is like watching the blue collar comedy for 8 years. Anyways, I can tell you are from Paragon so no bother going into it deeper. |
| Living In Reality Wednesday, March 31, 2010: 4:03 pm More from Living In Reality | My family and I have been in the fight of our lives with the sheriff’s department for the last 19 months. The truth about our sheriff’s department is not what is being printed in the newspaper. What you really need to know when you go cast your vote is that our sheriff’s department has huge problems. The jail staff is unqualified and untrained. The medical staff is a joke. The communication between Martinsville city police and the sheriff’s department is a joke. There is no open door policy. There is no accountability. Safety of inmates is not a top priority of the jail. I am disgusted that Downey has the nerve to say out loud that he deals more with good people who are victims. Jeff Lanham died at his jail. Mr Chief Deputy told us that he viewed the video from the jail and that nothing unusual was found. Amazingly we didn’t get to see this video because it was erased by the jail staff. We asked for a coroner’s report. There isn’t one. We asked for the investigation from the Death Investigation Team. Again nothing. I have sat in front of four employees of the jail while their depositions were taken. None of them knew the name of the doctor employed by the jail. NONE OF THEM. Most of them didn’t know jail policy. Why did someone have to die before Downey realized that the jail has liability? He doesn’t sound very qualified to me. |
| Themanishere Friday, April 2, 2010: 7:57 pm More from Themanishere | Living, You must be part of the Lanham family? If so its not all the Sheriffs Departments fault. I believe the officer that arrested Jeff was told he swallowed a ample amount of pills. So he should have been taken right then to the ER. I know Jeff because I went to school with him and know his back ground and no im not from Paragon. So before you want to bash the sheriffs dept and Mr Downey step back and look at who really is at fault. Did the Sheriffs Dept force pills down his throat?? Dont think so. Its bad when his own sister said she was waiting on the day for him to OD. So maybe before you bash everyone else except the person who f***ed up take a look at your own family members and what they are saying |
| Living In Reality Saturday, April 3, 2010: 11:46 am More from Living In Reality | It's the Sheriff's Deparment fault that they didn't follow policy and procedure. They should have never accepted Jeff into jail in the first place. Then they let him vomit blood for several hours. Then they gave him 5 bruises and a gash on the back of his head. You need to get your facts straight. And you are right it's not all the Sheriff's Departments fault. The Martinsville police officer who arrested him is just as guilty. I guess if Ron Furniss had died in jail of alcohol poisoning when he was picked up; he would have deserved to die too. |
| Themanishere Saturday, April 3, 2010: 12:33 pm More from Themanishere | Im not saying anyone deserves to die. Im saying its not all the Sheriffs or Jails fault. Yes I will agree the guards should get a little more trainign but if he is talking and refusing treatment there isnt much they can do. I agree with you. The MPD officer should be held responsible also. I have been in that Jail. They have some respectful and good Guards and they have some total * s that there day will come that they get there ass whipped but the moral of the story is, is that its not really MCSD fault. It all goes back to the officer which we both know who it was and he is a well i wont say his name or what I think of him |
| Themanishere Saturday, April 3, 2010: 12:34 pm More from Themanishere | Oh and as im aware that the former coroner is now running for Washington Twp trustee so remember how he handled this when you go vote. Manley for Trustee!!! |
| A Hoosier Saturday, April 3, 2010: 12:57 pm More from A Hoosier | Themanishere, I swear I disagree with you more than anyone else on here. You stated that the officers need more training. That is your answer to a family who has to bury a 24-year old man. I am sorry but that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Common sense. If someone in your family were vomiting blood, you would say to them, I need more training? That young man should have been taken to the hospital. If the cops can hold you down and take your blood without consent, I am thinking they can take you to the hospital if you are in their care. The fact that this family is unable to collect information to file a suit against the sheriff's department is a disgrace. This, my friend, is called a cover-up. |
