Mayor suspends officers without pay

Simply lame excuse for inexcusable behavior. Police mode does not give them the right to assault children (or anyone else) or the right to use excessive force when dealing with the public. |
| Liberty Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 10:15 am More from Liberty | When an old dog gets mean you have to either lock-em up, chain-em up or put-em down. But you have to keep-em away from the youngster. Two Questions. 1. Is the child's guardians the owner of the day care ? 2. Was the younger officer Johnson ordered to tase the lad by his superior Officer Jennings ? Johnson was the only one that gave the whole story after all. . |
| Wilbur Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 10:30 am More from Wilbur | abathar, I know you haven't asked me but I would like to comment on your post. I agree with you, my parents too, would have lit me up three ways from Sunday if I used that kind of language AT ALL; no matter what the situation is. That is, in my opinion, what is wrong with the youth today, not enough parenting. But a Police Officer has no right to slap, hit anyone unless they are in a physical altercation (fight) with that person giving they or another are in harms way. Just because someone doesn't comply with a request (and that is what it was, not a command) from another, especially a Police Officer, does warrant a hands on situation. I understand your anguish over today's attitude of not just our youth, but of those that don't care about themselves or others. But a person in a position of authority must not become one of 'them' too. One can't be in a position/office to uphold the rights of others and ignore those rights when it comes to themselves and their position. |

| abathar Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 1:21 pm More from abathar | No problem Wilbur. I am perhaps older than you and remember a time when I got spanked by my neighbor's mom for throwing firecrackers on her porch, then going home and getting it again when she called my mom to tell her what I did. I know there's a fine line between abuse and corporal punishment these days, but I guess I see too many kids now saying and doing things that would have had me picking up a tooth or two back when I was a kid to get overly stressed over a backhand attention-getter. There is no fear of reprisals anymore for so many of the kids these days, heck some of the younger parents I know would think they hit the jackpot if a officer was to hit their kid, much less taser them, dreams of a huge settlement dancing in their heads while they call the nearest lawyer. |
| SpectrumMommy Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 1:33 pm More from SpectrumMommy | There are bad parents and bad children but that's not the issue. The issue is whether the force that was used was appropriate or not for these two officers to use against a 94 lb child. I'm not quite 30 and when I was a child my father used a leather belt on me as did many of my peer's parents. Some of my peers got worse. I think maybe it's not that back in the good ole days parents punished their kids the right way and today they're scared to do so but that perhaps parents today remember their childhoods and want to be better parents than theirs were. I think we all aspire to be better parents than we had even if we thought ours did a great job. 'Back in the day' stealing was a hanging offense but our society has changed since then. |
| Greg Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 5:47 pm More from Greg | The problem (for me) isn't the Tasering or the slapping. My parents were hard on me, and if I would have had the choice, I'd have much rather been Tasered than what I got. My issue with this is who did it. No officer has the right to be judge, jury, and executioner.... ever. If the officer had called the boys parents and asked them to cut a switch and tear that boy up with it, I would have been cool with that. If the officer had cut the switch and been the one using it... far different story. No doubt the boy needed "lit up" as my dad would have said, but the two officers overstepped their bounderies and the limits of responsible law enforcement. As for Jennings, it sounds like he has a long history of similar behaviour. Keep him or not, he will always be a liability to the department and taxpayers after this event. Many of his future calls will result in someone filing a complaint, and regardless of fault or not, we will all pay to defend him or settle the claim. I don't see how the city or department can afford to keep either of them. |

Well said Greg. |
| I am watching you Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 8:59 pm More from I am watching you | I have to say that it's interesting to see some of the comments posted tonight. One thing I would like to point out. If the police officers had wrestled the kid to the ground for being out of control, handcuffing him or putting him in a straight jacket, the kid would have had more scrapes, scratches and bruises on him than the 2 marks left on his shoulder from the tasing. I still don't agree that the officer should have tased the kid, but like the paper reported the 10 year old was calm when they left. I guess it must have gotten his attention! Since he was out of control, something had to be done to bring him under control. Any suggestions? I know what comes to my mind restraining, choke hold, bear hug, ect....would probably have not worked in this situation. I know that some people have suggested reasoning with him, but really I can't see any reasoning taking place with someone in a rage, as was also reported. If I had told someone f-you I would have had a fat lip and probably some loose teeth to go with it. I can't blame Bill for smacking the kid over that either. That is a word not to be uttered to another human being. So go ahead and rate me how ever you want, but that is the truth!!!! |

| A Hoosier Tuesday, April 6, 2010: 10:13 pm More from A Hoosier | I am watching you, I must tell you how much I enjoyed your post. It reminded me that ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) is used on adults with major depression. An electric shock is administered to the patients brain. I have seen patients following this procedure. I can tell you it is highly effective. Patients are no longer depressed, in fact they can't tell you their own name, what they had for lunch, or where they live. I can see how the child calmed right down. |
