School board proved they are gutless...again. Nice job you pathetic step-n-fetch-its. Sends a great message to the students. Remember kids, it's who, not what, you know.

Thank you Martinsville School Board for maintaining some sense of sanity throughout this process. The penalties seem fair, and Dr. Furniss is getting the 2nd chance he deserves. Now, let's get back to work...

The flagrant behavior of Mr. Furniss has now been equaled by the decision of the Board...both actions are an embarrassment to our community. Shame on all of them.

You are striking out against some very respective people,, whom unlike you and some, wanted him fired from day one,, where these board members all awaited, and thought alot, about their decision instead of jumping on here without considering!!! I myself,, and hope all my friends, agree!! Again I got a second chance!! Just my opinon,, so feel free to frie me form RT.. VERY proud of the board,, assts,, attourney, for being fair!!

He's no role model for my kids. The school board members all have their heads in the sand or where the sun don't shine. Do you people know what the rest of the state and country really think about this kind of cover-up. When will the people of Martinsville, begin to attempt, to live their lives with some degree of dignity, morals and values? Would our beloved John Wooden (someone with a high degree of moral fiber) agree with this kind of behavior by the school superintendent? He would say to them all, have you made a masterpiece of today? All the school board has done is to prolong the agony of those of us who know exactly how many of the school staff are abusing alcohol. All of the local "clubs", the Elks, the VFW, the Legion, the Moose are just social drinking organizations. Check out how many of your school employees are members in these organizations. Shame on the school board for not having the guts to make a stand for our kids and show them that even a high paid community leader doesn't have the right to place all of us in jeopardy with this kind of drunk driving. Where are the Mothers Against Drunk Driving when you need them. Shame, shame, shame on the school board. Try electing some new members that know something about providing great education. He wins the get out of jail free card. If you keep this guy on board, then you are certainly going to find him continuing his drinking and law breaking. Would the school board hire a superintendent that has a criminal record for drunk driving? Then why keep this piece of trash around. He's a transplant to our great community and I for one don't care for his morals and values (he has none! I'm sure the next thing we hear is that he's a great religious man who needs forgiveness). Just look in the jails if you want to find religious converts....only thing he's sorry for is getting caught.

I am so disappointed in our school board for their decision on Ron Furniss. He should never have a car provided for him again. Hopefully he will get more than a smack on the hand from the court system but I doubt it. Thanks Liberty for giving us info on school board members. None of them will ever get a vote from me. Must be some of his golfing or drinking buddies. Guess money and position has it's benefits.I cannot think a teacher or janitor or school bus driver would get off so easy!!!!!!

Dear Mister Newman,

I have in the past respected your comments on this forum and you usually have in the past been reasonable in your opinions. I don't know you outside this site but you have made one major mistake my friend and you have made it publicly.

You have shown that although you met a guy just once who's named Mr Furness, the top leader of the students of Martinsville, who has a drinking problem and drives drunk in school property, you are impressed.

You do know, most all the school board members here, and consider them very wise and I will accept and respect their findings, and you agree with them! Your " VERY proud of the board"

You said : "board members all awaited, and thought alot, about their decision instead of jumping on here without considering!!! " Considering what ?

Lots of nice words Mister Newman, "Impressive Furness", ( who I know and like)" wise school board members", "a second chance!!" ( hum.. some word is missing here) and then you came on here to insult someone who you have never addressed before , for what ? For what Danny ? For being someone unlike you and your wise and impressive fine upstanding buddy's. ? You insult me and others because we didn't leave out the only possible and valid consideration and reason we pay any of these inconsiderate bums for in the first place. The child. The Child Mister Newman. oop's No not the c word..... Remember what we pay a school board for, or did you even know ? Remember what we pay a superintendent for , or did you even know?

Did you know none of these positions are jobs but leadership positions ? Solely in place to protect, lead and provide appropriate education services for our children. The child is the only relevant party in any of their considerations. We don't pay them to consider anything other than whats best for the children in the community. Not teachers, Not drunk superintendents, and not jobs. The only reason any of them are here is the child.

Now that you put your good name out here to insult me for placing the child's well being over your impressive buddy's you should understand that you only have shown your that your value system matches your buddy's and non of you are wothy of working or being responsible for children.

I normally have a disdain for those who put children last but nothing is more disappointing than people who don't even place the child to begin with. Not once did I read that the school board, furness or yourself consider the effect keeping a drunk superintendent will have on the life dependent decision making of teenagers. I've heard of missing the point but this is a massive one that explains it all about those you are involved.

This has and never had anything to do with some adult who drinks, It's the children and the message this sends to them. Now that you have exposed where your values are on the matter you should reconsider them on this matter.

This isn't about politics it's about students. I no longer respect your decision making abilities. Just my opinion.

Sweet Moses... Liberty and Newman, if ya'll are gonna have a rumble, lemme know where it's gonna be so I can join. I have never met either of you so I'm not sure whose butt I'll be a-kicking, but a-kicking I will be!

I have been accused numerous times of sticking to my principles too stringently. I just don't recognize many gray areas. I see simple blacks and whites, and try to make my decisions based on the principles I was taught early in life.

The simple fact is that I detest the abuse of alcohol, period. It's killed more people than drugs and war combined, caused more divorces than adultery and money combined, and done more damage to our community and nation than the national debt.

We call alcoholism a disease, yet our government taxes it and we celebrate it and condone it as a social activity. Its a disease that we can't afford to live without, so we foster it.

Fact: This man was twice the legal limit of intoxication.
Fact: He was driving a county-owned vehicle.
Fact: This man is a community leader.

I made several phone calls about a judge's wife in a similar predicament recently, I've called the county sheriff and most of the local judges about beefing up sentences, I've been actively pursuing every avenue available to me to slow or stop the community ignorance that IS drug and alcohol abuse.

If we forget the human suffering and go straight to the hip pocket, maybe it will make more sense. It's about tax money, Danny. Less drug and alcohol use/abuse, fewer OWI's in county vehicles = fewer police officers, probation officers, judges, jail officers, work-release centers, lower insurance premiums, lower taxes. When you follow all of that with fewer divorces, lost lives, damaged property and bodies, public humiliation and lost reputations, the price is simply unaffordable.

If the county ditch-digger is caught operating his county-owned shovel in a county right-of-way, you can bet yer sweet bippy I'm gonna be all over it.

And I use my real name, have it on the side of my truck, and am AT LEAST as available for comment and/or whipping as you are. :-)

My sincere apologies to the county ditch-digger for the hypothetical analogy. Ya did a FINE job on the ditch at my house and I greatly appreciate it!
