Walmart fabric section disappearing

If you haven't noticed, they seem to be getting rid of all areas that require a human to help their customers. I retired from the company a year ago and have watched it steadily decline since. I think a better idea would be to rally the Hobby Lobby customer service department to bring their store to our town. We need a store that has values and cares about us again. I have already submitted a suggestion to them to try to fill at least one of our town's vacant stores... the old K-Mart building would fit them perfectly. And they sell everything we need for our arts and crafts, including fabric... at reasonable prices. It's time to give up on Walmart and think outside the box. I agree that driving out of town is not an option for a lot of our residents, so let's rally to get them to come to us! Martinsville needs some actual commerce... not a bunch of empty buildings. |
| Liberty Friday, April 30, 2010: 12:32 pm More from Liberty | Walmart is in the business to make a profit like it should be. All the millions of mom and pops, factory workers, teachers who own Walmart wants it that way. Having wrote that I will say one out of 10 times I have gone close to that department have I seen anyone else there. It loses money because the demand just isn't enough to make it profitable for the owners. ( me + you ). Places like Hobby Lobby has put all the millions of mom and pops who own Walmart stock out of the craft business. Bad for me but good for those who own Hobby Lobby and smaller craft store. What is notable about this is, when Walmart does a good providing what people want they get slammed because they hurt businesses like small craft stores or Hobby Lobby but, when they stop providing some thing people wants, which helps the small craft stores and Hobby Lobby prosper people still complain about them. Don't think the socialist propaganda designed to demonize freedom though enterprise doesn't have an effect on brain tissue. All the little people who own a piece of the American dream by owning their share of a business are frightened over the effects this socialist President is having on their company's. Millions of retired grandparents count on their success to be able to eat. Just ask someone who used to own a piece of GM before Obama confiscated it :) . |
| A Hoosier Friday, April 30, 2010: 6:48 pm More from A Hoosier | I wish Walmart would disappear. Oh, what a happy day that would be. Walmart insured their personnel and then profitted from their deaths. Oh yeah, believe it. And I am not talking about their execs, I am talking about their line staff. Walmart lobbied for Obamacare with the SEIU. Why you ask? Because Target was able to pay for less expensive health insurance for their employees. So with gubment mandates on insurance, Target will have to pay higher premiums which could eliminate them as a competitor to Walmart. (Now, that's good business right there.) I haven't step foot in a Walmart in over a year and had only been in once the year before, because I needed a printer cartridge. Never again. I now get my printer cartridges from the office supply store on the square. To me, Walmart is the mafia of retail. |

Read about it. Obamanomics authored by Tim Carney. I highly recommend it. BTW, how much did the UAW give to Obama for his election? |
| artsandcraftsy Friday, April 30, 2010: 11:58 pm More from artsandcraftsy | @ Liberty: Having worked there for fifteen years, I heard the fabric bell ding so many times I heard it in my sleep. And when it would ring, there were many times that the person at the counter purchased up to twenty yards of fabric... it would be stacked high. There may not have been high volume of people in the department at any given time, but they bought in bulk. The real issue Walmart had with their fabric dept. was getting someone to answer the bell when it would ring. They just don't want to deal with service areas anymore. Have you noticed the video games are no longer behind locked glass? Another way to cut back staff... even though theft is through the roof. I don't think Hobby Lobby, Michael's, or JoAnn Fabrics drove Walmart to stop carrying those items. Most people checked their local Walmart first for items to try to save money. As a consumer of these products I would only drive 30 miles out of town to obtain them if I couldn't get them at Walmart. The selection of art supplies was minimal, but I could usually find very nice fabric there. There are many older residents of the community that cannot drive to Bloomington or Greenwood for their hobby supplies. Are they supposed to just give up their hobbies because Walmart needs to be more profitable? Hobby Lobby is a company built on faith... they are closed on Sunday, and they play instrumental hymns in their stores. They are not a company built on greed. Sam Walton built Walmart on similar values. Too bad he's no longer with us. Remember when Walmart was closed on Sundays? That was a LONG time ago. Don't get me wrong... Walmart was good to me personally... I was well paid, well compensated with profit sharing and 401k benefits and had great insurance. But I have watched them roll downhill for a long time in the way they treat their customers and their staff. And it's definitely not going to ever go the opposite direction again. |

| I am watching you Sunday, May 2, 2010: 2:21 pm More from I am watching you | I was just in Wal-Mart yesterday and heard the employee working in the area say that the craft section was becoming the store's clearance section. How sad! I have shopped there for years and enjoyed the fact that I could buy yarn there to make baby blankets for my new grandchildren, buy facing, thread, embroidary yarn, needles, ect....this is the only store in town to buy these items from. I understand wanting to make a profit, but there is also the issue of customer service. When the customer can't find what they need locally, then they take their hard earned dollars to another store and in this situation it will be stores out of our county, which means a loss of tax revenue. Unfortunately all we have in this town is Wal-Mart and the company should pay attention to the local customers who shop there! |
