| One Voice Monday, June 7, 2010: 11:07 am More from One Voice | I believe the Basketball Hall of Fame would be the better choice. Martinsville does not have the facility or the money to do this collection justice. Let's show our respect to Coach Wooden and let the collection go to somewhere that can do it the justice it deserves! |
| Reality Check Monday, June 7, 2010: 12:06 pm More from Reality Check | This will be interesting to see what the folks in this community come up with. This could turn out to be a national deal with folks coming in and such OR a flounder. Good luck Elmer. |
| Redrum Monday, June 7, 2010: 12:27 pm More from Redrum | A better idea would be to contact Purdue. Let them have the collection under an agreement that they keep it in Martinsville. That the collection can have a nice building and the similar that it deserves. |
| Wilbur Monday, June 7, 2010: 12:48 pm More from Wilbur | This is a wonderful gift from a National Treasure. This would be a good time for Martinsville to stand up and be accounted for. Now is as good a time as any to set up a City/County Museum. I know Mooresville has something, but being the County Seat and the wonderful history of this City and County needs a 1st class venue to show the world. Mr. Wooden obviously thought enough of his birthplace to endow us with his testament on and of his life. We must honor that with the utmost respect. If we can't do the justice deserved of Mr. Wooden and his love for Martinsville and Morgan County, then we need to entrust it with those that will. I hope the powers that be will give it their all to accomplish this very honorable task. This could very easily be the defining moment to the rest of the world of what Martinsville and Morgan County is. Mr. Wooden is easily Martinsville’s most famous son and contributor to the world, but he isn’t the only great contribution this City has made. Let everyone else see the Sons and Daughters this City has reared to make the world a better place. Martinsville/Morgan County can name, National Government leaders, world class athletes, War Hero’s, peacekeepers and much more, This community has given many that have shaped this Nation and the world.. We know them, why shouldn’t the rest of the world know about them |
| downtown customer Monday, June 7, 2010: 2:03 pm More from downtown customer | Why let some other town have this collection. I am sure Mr. Reynolds will see that it has a special place in Martinsville. This may be what our town needs to help the community and make it a place for visitors. I guess some people think Martnsville is such a hick town that we can't handle a collection such as this. Elmer was born and raised in this town and He will do his best. |
| STANDING BYE Monday, June 7, 2010: 2:08 pm More from STANDING BYE | What would be ideal place is the old fire station.Downtown/Centralized and was there when he was in Martinsville back in the 20s. Dont know what the City has planned for that former space, rather than just sitting there empty. |
| Ed Monday, June 7, 2010: 2:36 pm More from Ed | Wilbur, Great idea City/County Museum. We need a grand venue and not some old jollapadated house. Come to tonight’s meeting and help. |
| Wilbur Monday, June 7, 2010: 2:50 pm More from Wilbur | Ed, I'll try and be there, have grandkid plans tonight.....I may bring em with me LOL |
| LilaMae Monday, June 7, 2010: 3:18 pm More from LilaMae | This is a great collection and it would be wonderful to keep this here in Martinsville. However with that said, I don't see where the budget could allow for that to happen. It is a great idea to create a City/County Museum but our citizens of this city/county can not take another debt. We are paying so many taxes now, and with businesses lost throughout the city/county where will the money come from? I don't mean to be a nay sayer because John Wooden was an incredible icon to the sport, but these days the money is as tight as it can get. Elmer, please bring some viable options tonight that don't include the tax payers footing the bill for the museum. |
| Liberty Monday, June 7, 2010: 4:01 pm More from Liberty | It's good to see someone bring Honor to the town of Martinsville instead of shame. Coach Wooden brought honor to what ever he was involved with. Our local government should follow his principles and make this town worthy of using John Wooden's name for more than just a slogan to attract unsuspecting visitors. The effect of the life and times of John Wooden go's far beyond sports but in the halls of business , teaching, and even the overall ethics of the nation. All have been toughed and taught the Wooden principles on ethics. Just think of what he would have thought of a superintendent of his old school that also bares his name who's drinking problem now influences all the young people in the community, and who's responsible for a school who's( teachers)teaching cheating by having the students cheat on a state test ( ISTEP ) and for the high school that has his name on it having one of the lowest graduation rates. What would Coach Wooden do if he lived here ? What would Wooden think of the government and police corruption of a town that loves to swing Mr. Wooden's name around for advertising. What would Coach Wooden do if he lived here ? My guess he would leave and not come back. That's how he handled other situations like this in his carrier. When confronted with corruption and cheating he just turned and walked away. Just a closing thought. I here people in our local establishment talking of how proud they are of John R. Wooden. To be proud one must first hold claim to some form of responsibility of Mr Wooden's success. Trust me on this. When it comes to that, Martinsville has proven to be a complete recipient in their relationship with John R. Wooden. They certainly can't take any prideful credit for his success. John Robert Wooden - What a man America can be proud of even though not worthy of. . |
