Barnard House might be museum option
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Redrum Thursday, June 10, 2010: 11:54 am More from Redrum | No no no no no no. Lets put it in a building that people will be comfortable walking into. Not saying its a bad building, but thats just the way it goes, people won't want to visit a museum if it doesn't look like one. This isn't flee-market junk and doesn't need to look like Grandpa's antique store. Seriously, PU and ISU would probably put up the money for a nice, contemporary, welcoming building if we let them put their names on it and borrow a couple pieces on rotation. |

| A Hoosier Thursday, June 10, 2010: 12:13 pm More from A Hoosier | Brenda, Fair enough, LOL. I'm not familiar with this building but I do like older homes and their craftsman work. It does sound as if this one may not have been taken care of. Could the historical society help restore it? How much time would that take? How much money? I am certain that you can help me understand this all. Deep breathe. LOL. |
| Liberty Thursday, June 10, 2010: 1:05 pm More from Liberty | YES, This makes sense. John Dillinger Museum Bigger than John Wooden Museum. Humm... There is more letters in Dillinger's name...... and the culture in the county seems to have been more influenced by Dillinger than Wooden. Barnard House, Great Idea County guys. Was that Barney's idea ? The old fire dept is way to nice of a building with way to historical of architecture for someone who really didn't even kill and plunder anyone like Dillinger. Oh well. I guess The Wooden Museum shouldn't be as big as the Guy that the county's school and government modeled themselves by. . |
| Doug Arthur Thursday, June 10, 2010: 1:10 pm More from Doug Arthur | I love Elmer to death, but I hope he isn't playing the two ends from the middle. Monday he said that Mr. Wooden wanted it in Martinsville, now it’s just in Indiana. What ever the families wishes are lets honor it. The idea brought to the City Council Monday night was for a John R. Wooden City/County Museum. The City and County should work together on this. But fair warning, leave the kingdoms behind and work for the better cause. The Barnard House was purchased by the County to tear down, why now is it such a great place to use now? I hope it isn't because they own it. Again leave the Kingdoms at the door. First of all that house isn't the right place to put it. Size and location alone tell us that. Where's the parking? Where's the ambiance for this venue? Next to the backward built County Annex, in a mostly residential neighborhood? Come on, I read where they want to act and it needs to be quick, WRONG. I agree it needs attention starting right now, but to act on it is WAY too soon. I submitted my name to be on the committee, and hope I get considered. This project needs thought and plenty of it. I stated many times as a City Councilman that there were projects to do to enhance Martinsville as a place to live and visit without losing our natural beauty and keeping our ‘hometown’ appeal. We needn’t be a ‘big’ City to attract. This endeavor is right in line with what many of us have been saying. Why couldn’t this be a multifaceted building? Why couldn’t events be held there too? Have you bee to the NCAA building in Indy? I have been to a couple of weddings there and it’s pretty cool walking around the halls looking at the history of Collegiate Sports. Wine tasting at the Art Museum in Indy? Why not here? Listen I’m as cultured as a pearl from a mussel that came out of White River, but to have the opportunity to have places like that here and to enjoy not only our History but the company of friends in a festive atmosphere; why not. There is a multitude of ways to raise the funds for this project. It is quite doable, but as I said above, no kingdoms or attitudes need attend. This is to honor a man and hopefully a City and a County. This is a chance for us to better ourselves, by the example of this humble man and to learn who, what and where we have come from. Form a history as a community of different backgrounds that share a common address. What harm would there be if you or I or our children picked up a trait from Mr. Wooden or an ancestor that fought hard to make this Nation as great as it is by visiting this inspirational building of history? There would be no harm, only loss, if it isn’t done correctly. I pray that we do Mr. Wooden and his family; This City and County the honor it so honestly deserves. We have to crawl before we walk, we must plan before we act |

| A Hoosier Thursday, June 10, 2010: 1:52 pm More from A Hoosier | John Wooden often said, "you can't live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you." Read more. Article about the comments, by the congressman, in the house yesterday. |
