This is fantastic. It's about time we had something constructive for kids to do in Martinsville... and using one of the vacant buildings at the same time is an added bonus.

The article doesn't specify whether the membership dues would be annually or monthly. If it is an annual fee, it is reasonable. If it is monthly it could be that a lot of families won't be able to benefit from it.

Generally, the families that can afford membership fees send their kids to the YMCA, or camp. Kids whose parents cannot afford such luxuries are generally those who are bored, in trouble and in need of a clean atmosphere to spend their free time. Charging membership fees could make this yet another activity that they cannot participate in.

It is the first step in the right direction to better our community. Just don't leave behind the kids who can benefit from it the most. Find a way to make it available to everyone... whether they can pay membership fees or not.

At the very least offer a program where you sponsor 10-20 kids each year that can go free. Choose different kids each year. Seek business sponsors in the community to cover membership fees in return for their name on the wall. There are ways to expand the program to those who could not pay, you just have to be creative and want to make it happen!

I think this project will be great for the community! Very excited to hear that it is in the works.
