Real problem needs to be addressed
read more recent story comments Reader comments| mcbacker Tuesday, June 22, 2010: 12:50 pm More from mcbacker | Obviously you are assuming the Department of Child Services knew about the first episode. I've heard several conflicting stories about this child and the foster parents. I had heard the foster parent worked at this day care and that is why the child was there in the first place. Is that correct? I also have heard that this day care was for special needs children although not licensed by the State. I find it somewhat disturbing that two grown women and two grown men could not subdue a 10 year old child without the use of slapping and tasering him. I also cannot understand why ANYONE would send their child back to this day care without them being licensed and knowing what has happened. Just my opinion. |
| Brian Culp Tuesday, June 22, 2010: 2:55 pm More from Brian Culp | The foster parent is the owner of the daycare. The day care is not solely for children with special needs. In an interview, the owner said they take special needs children when other day cares won't. The owner is fully licensed according to the state website: https://secure.in.gov/apps/fssa/carefinder/index.html. We are assuming the Dept. of Child Services knew about the incident because there had been changes in medication recently, according to the foster mother. This had to be done through doctors, who all report to DCS. We are not condoning or condemning the actions of the officers in this editorial. We wanted to use this editorial to point out that there is another issue within this situation that bears careful examination. Brian Culp Managing Editor |

We wanted to use this editorial to point out that there is another issue within this situation that bears careful examination Very well stated and so very true. A very well written and infromative Editorial, my hat is off to you and the staff that contributed. Thank you |
| Puzzled Wednesday, June 23, 2010: 12:53 pm More from Puzzled | This is not the first time I've seen the "staff" write an editorial. As a student of journalism I'm embarrassed by this practice. I have no issue with any position expressed in an editorial, but it is silly to expect that any expressed position is that of the entire staff. If you share the opinion of the editorial then sign your name. I certainly hope the "staff editorial" byline is not a method just to remain anonymous. |
| Give Me A Break Wednesday, June 23, 2010: 2:06 pm More from Give Me A Break | Puzzled: I understand your argument here but I'm also "puzzled" why you wouldn't use your real name while criticizing the editorial staff for not using theirs. Just saying.... |

I'm not the writer of the editorial, but that should be obvious. Forgive me, I don't think I caught your name. |
| Give Me A Break Friday, June 25, 2010: 9:00 am More from Give Me A Break | Nope, you didn't catch my name and you won't catch my name but I've never criticized an editorial for NOT using their names! Geez....don't be so touchy I SAID I understood your argument. |
| Brian Culp Friday, June 25, 2010: 2:12 pm More from Brian Culp | They are staff editorials because there are three, sometimes four people who sit down in the newsroom and decide what we want to editorialize about for that day. We discuss the issues and come to a consensus about what we want to write. One person will take the lead in writing the editorial, but all three or four of us will add and take parts out of the editorials until we get what you see in the newspaper. I did the lead writing on this editorial, but there were parts that got added and taken out in the process of writing it by the two others who were helping. Puzzled: Editorial boards are a common practice in journalism and have been for many years. It would be rare to find a newspaper that has an individual sign such an editorial. Give me a Break, Nope, you didn't catch my name ...I guessing bad hands and you won't catch my name.....alright, I'm guessing again, either a bad a** curve (high and inside) or a nasty slider...LOL Sorry, I just couldn't help myself Wilbur throws banana's like Jane The monkeys and we mean it!! |
| Give Me A Break Monday, June 28, 2010: 10:50 am More from Give Me A Break | Brian: Of course the piece was written by your Editorial Board and, yes, that is certainly used by every newspaper I've ever read. I worked once for a statewide political candidate and she spent a lot of time being interviewed by Editorial Boards all over Indiana. That's why I was "puzzled" that "Puzzled" seemed so upset by this concept and went on to mention that he/she was a student of journalism. |
