Any public or public office use of the Barnard house would require the house to meet ADA specs, possibly even requiring an elevator to be installed. Ramps, doorways, interior thresholds, handicap-accessible bathrooms, even doorknobs. In addition to reworking the wiring, A/C, and heating systems. A taxpayer money pit.

A second Economic Development Office? You've got to be kidding! I'm not convinced that Morgan County can even justify one Economic Development Office!

Maybe this should be added as a referendum on the November 2010 ballot!

Hey! This referendum idea sounds like a great idea to me. How about:

The courthouse clock should be repaired! Does anyone remember when the clock was last working? (The estimated cost for repair was $7,000.00 in 1996. I'll bet it's more than that now!!)

Also, yet another referendum: The word
"court house" should be removed and spelled correctly -- "Courthouse" on the front of the Toner Building!

Also, the downtown Martinsville street lights should be repaired and maintained! Downtown Martinsville looks like a war-zone at night! How many precinct committee people does it take to screw in a light bulb/replace a globe?

All very good referendum items for the November election!

Until this community learns to get out of its own way, we will NEVER progress. EVER. Why on earth would anyone in their right mind come to us with any type of community growth interest, when the very office that they need to make interim contact with reflects the community as a disgusting rat hole?! Time and time again, we throw earrings on a pig and call it a masterpiece. It's just pathetic.

And Mr. Quyle, are you STILL beating that tired old I-69 drum? The best I can figure is that you either: 1. Have asphalt stock options. 2. Are lunch buddies with the Troll of Indiana. Have you YET to take a trip on any other interstate that has been run through or adjacent to other towns to see that THERE IS NOTHING GOING ON? There is no real “field of dreams” Mr. Quyle. It was a movie. Interstates that have been in existence for 4 plus decades have produced NOTHING. Interstates are antiquated, outdated. Their time has passed. I gave up on you a long time ago. And every time you come out with one of your bright ideas or profound statements, it just reinforces in me that I made the right decision way back when to disregard anything you say and toss it in the round file.

ED - you're just about spot on. Not sure about the Quayle part, but the rest of your post reflects an alarming sentiment of the "old" community of Morgan Co. They like just as it is but fail to realize no one can live here and work here and enjoy the plush rewards many of them have come to enjoy! If 50% of your population qualifies for free or reduced lunch kids, we've got a problem. BUT, people here fail to realize this. They want no part of ANY change here - just good old 1950's living - literally if you catch my drift. They still believe the Fall foliage can be run for $1,000 and gold fish ponds are #1. Elmer got caught up in the hoopla with Wooden and his great past, too. What those in charge need to do is listen to the working people of the community - not the old stale rhetoric of the old guard. AND, we need new voters and new candidates who want to do these things. Unfortunately, we elect the same people over and over and wish and hope and mostly pray that things will get better - and they don't. I'm not sure spending $50,000 on a think-tank in Morgan Co. is the answer, but God bless Adams and Collier for trying to do something in this county other than sit around and complain about people who try to do things with their time other than mope and complain on the Reporter comments page. Wait until property taxes are capped next year. It will only get more interesting for the common folks here. They'll literally be no money in state government - which will affect ALL aspects of daily life. If I were a state politican right now, I would start explaining why we will probably have to let 1,000's of inmates out now. And, close more schools and lay off more teachers. Oh, and shut down the library and probably lay off police and fire in all 92 counties by 2011. Can't wait.

I would also try this: No more free rides - for anyone. End all social programs effective Janaury 1, 2011. No more SS, No more medicare/medicaid, food stamps, WIC, disability, unemployment - ALL OF IT. No go find a job and quit complaining. Oh, and end both wars on Jan 2nd, just to throw off the terrorists on the dates thing. That should recoup a HUGE chunck of the money the Republicans want to pay back that they spent in the past 10 years of your money (actually the wars were on loan from China's treasury, but who cares?)

Last question - and seriously now: Where were the deficit hawks when they were spending a Billion a week on two wars? Giving tax breaks to the richest 1%? And borrowing billions more to continue to pay for the war? OR, authorizing prescription drug plan bill? (Which Steve Buyer went around proclaiming he co-wrote, but didn't?) OR, selling out to big oil (drill baby!) or you name it....the list goes on and on. Not to blame just the GOP, but seriously here. Now you want to talk about the debt? I'm going to puke now.

Oh, and two million Americans just got whacked from the GOP with no unemployment - cause they are worried about the debt now. All of the sudden they have a conscience about spending!!!!!! BUT only if it's in regard to REAL WORKING men and women - notice that? This is insane.

I heard an older gentlemen at the barber shop say we needed to take our country back the other day. I asked him, take it back to what? Where exactly was it? He could not answer my question. I helped him: This president has two wars, an economic crisis and an oil spill. You cannot possilby look me in the face and blame one person for all of this? No reply.

Ed,
I believe there's a place reserved high on a mountain top for you. People will come....yes, they will. Dead nut on with your assessment on this; the County has lost its mind and Mr. Quyle is just one of the leaders of the parade. I hate it that Mr. Quyles generation is still falling into the 'my kingdom for your horse' politician. It's isn't his kingdom, but I'd gladly supply the horse. I'd point it north and slap it's flanks to get him going.
The County bought this house to tear down (no other thought given when they bought it I guess) and it seems ever since they took the heat, they have been trying to pawn it off for every little office; museum and meeting place that has came up.
I'd like to make this suggestion; why not make it a retirement home for old decrepit politicians.....seems such a natural choice to me.

I love two-fers. When two things can be accomplished for less than the total price of each separated, I usually am for it. Whether or not it was a good idea to save this nice old house is sort of a moot point now. It is there. It appears to be a solid, well-built example of 19th century architecture. If the plan is to make something of it, while maintaining its historic significance, and if the decision is made to locate an EDO office in Martinsville, and they can bring some money to the project, I say look at it carefully for feasibility.

Sillyoldman has a good point, but a bit over the top. Everything that is needed for an EDO office could be done on the first level, not requiring an expensive elevator for "customers". The other things he lists are not big-ticket items at all.

Reality and Wilbur, Well written. Wilbur, ol' buddy, I always enjoy your analogies. Reality, it’s OK to get fired up, I completely understand. It’s frustrating as all get out. We need more people to get fired up!
