Salary increases proposed for city officials, employees

Is Trout just trying to set up a pay raise so that he can run for Mayor in the future with a nice salary? Let's give Trout his wish and make him a one-term councilman. The city council set up the pay for the city superintendent. Did they not realize that if the person in this position met all the goals and attended all the meetings that the pay goes with it? I don't know if he does a good job or not, but don't hold it against Mr. Elliott that he gets paid for his work. Mrs Peden makes significantly more than the County Clerk. The Martinsville City Council makes much less than the Morgan County Council. You can't draw comparisons to support the "I deserve to be paid......" argument. You can always work somewhere else if you think you're worth more. At least I agree (this time) with Burgin's comment on the disparity of proposed raises. All employees and officials should share in the lean times. You're there for public service, not to be self-serving. The pay is adequate, not generous. When and if the annexation of much of Washington township into Martinsville is complete, there will be a much larger pool of eligible people who will be able to challenge the current city elected officials. |
| elelady Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 11:59 am More from elelady | I believe the mayor should be paid more then the city superintendent, but we can not afford to raise his salary 5000 in one year, let's take smaller steps and see what the economy does in the next couple of years. The city employees are not being under paid by any means, they are one of the top paid employees in the county, they could not go to Indy and start out a new job getting what they are paid now. It would not hurt anyone to have a pay freeze for at least one year, the State employees don't always get raises every year. Please remember the taxpayers of the city and how bad many have it in this ecomony now. If Mr. Trout is thinking of running for mayor, he is going about it all wrong, do not burden people with a large budget increase, they will not forget, believe me. |
| Ed Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 2:27 pm More from Ed | If the city reduces it's "contribution" to the useless Morgan County Economic Development Corp. that has produced absolutely nothing for the city of Martinsville, by say....$5,000 or $50,000 the money would be available to give the Mayor an increase in pay without creating an extra burden on anyone. As it stands, the $50,000 is being dumped into a black hole, earmarked for the benefit of Mooresville (Geoff Quail). |
| LilaMae Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 3:20 pm More from LilaMae | A $5,000 hike for the Martinsville mayor and a 1.5 percent boost for other city employees for 2011 were endorsed by Martinsville Common Council members during a budget workshop Monday afternoon. The proposed increases were being considered even though the city might have to deal with decreased revenues. Those two sentences should sum it up for all voters when they visit the voting booth in our next election. Even though there will not be as much money coming in, they still think they need more in salaries! What kind of morons do they think we are? There is no justification for it period. You can spin it however you want, but in the world of common sense, if the money isn't coming in, then you can't pay more out! |
| Reality Check Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 3:28 pm More from Reality Check | TIME-OUT: Did Martinsville get a large cash donation from the Governor? This is hypocricy at it's highest element. How can this council ask for raises when people don't have jobs? Teachers aren't getting raises. Local businesses aren't either. Police and fire? Nope. But, the mayor wants a $10,000 raise? The ONLY positive element out of this rate increase would be this: Maybe someone other than a Buskirk or Deckard would get to be mayor? I'll tell you what. Move that rate up to $65,000 and I'll run. |
| Greg Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 5:24 pm More from Greg | Reality, I think your politics stink. You're a liberal, an Obama-supporter, and I think you could be downright dangerous in an elected position. Regardless, you would have my vote in the Mayor's race! |
| Reality Check Tuesday, July 20, 2010: 8:39 pm More from Reality Check | Greg, I might surprise you and do it. AND, I would expect you walk the city with me! |
| ForthecitizensofWT Wednesday, July 21, 2010: 12:03 am More from ForthecitizensofWT | Reality, I will walk and talk with ya! This salary increase is bs. This Country is in the red and we wanna give raises? How about the fireman and police and teachers getting laid off and joining the rest of the americans who are getting screwed? These top ceos are making millions and billions but are they thinking twice about the people they are laying off? No!! Sounds kinda like our city admin! How about we start getting rid of the people who work for the city street department who just drive around and bs at the gas stations and put someone in there who wants to work and earn a honest check? How about starting there Mayor Deckard? We have all these people who I see out joking and smoking all day on the citys dime and not accomplishing anything except sitting at the gas stations talking for i know of a few of them for atleast 30-40 mins because I sat in my car across the road and watched the time. Maybe we should ask that Mr Roe step down from his post and put someone in there that knows how to work and do things. Just food for thought before you go asking for a big raise! |
| Liberty Wednesday, July 21, 2010: 12:39 pm More from Liberty | The Mayor, I know you read this. I know some are very angry and think you had your buddy's push for your $5000.00 raise. I for one first thought, how could a man who wants to show his face in public again take the poor peoples money out of their pockets when they are jobless and broke just to line his own greedy pocket without any respect for those who VOTED for him. Also, what kind of table-scrape could rob the city coffers as the town heads into a prolong depression that we are only at the beginning of ? As the town suffers to find money to fix streets and pay wages to those who actually needs a their job to feed their family or keep the city operating who could be so low to rob the people ? Then I thought...We don't have anyone that low at the top do we ? I have confidence we haven't that kind of Mayor in this town. I am sure our mayor will STEP UP AND MAKE THE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT TO REJECT A PAY INCREASE NOW for the sake of our town. No politician wants to run for office after spitting in the face of it's voters. Our Mayor is a man of honor and I'm for one am proud of him for refusing. Keep up your efforts to clean up a corrupt town. When you get that accomplished I campaign for a raise that's the same percentage as any other employee and not one born from a corrupt and scandalous Common Council. Now it's totally up to you. I know you'll do the right thing. . |
