I am not really sure I like this. Not knowing either man it pretty much says to me that Downey doesn't want to handle this on his own. I would like to see the new sheriff to make his own mark and run the department on his own.

Excellent choice! I had hoped this would be the case. Garner and Downey are one of the best working teams that the department has ever had.

John Q, you said it yourself, you do not know either man. When something works, why screw it up just for the sake of "making a mark". These two men together are a well oiled machine. They are honest, hard working and the best bang for your tax dollar.

Bob:

What does it matter what the current sheriffs son did? Its not the SHERIFF! And the sheriff had his own men investigate and put his son behind bars for it. Would you have been that way to your son? I doubt it! You would have swept it under the rug but Garner isnt like that! People make mistakes just as yours has! If you knew Jake you would know he did his time which was 6 months not 2 and was on probation and house arrest for a year and successfully completed it and DIDNT VIOLATE! Has he been in trouble in almost 3 years since he did his time? No. How many times has yours? Obviously if he violated he messed up again. They just dont violate someone for nothing! Stop crying because as it looks the public is happy for Mr Downeys choice and as others have said they are a great team and have brought the sheriffs department a long ways in 8 years!!

I had to think about this for a while then it became pretty clear. Us the good ole taxpayers will now be paying two people down there over a hundred thousand a year, a car to drive from home to the office, to lunch, back to the office and back home again. This is the sheriffs salary, retiring sheriffs salary plus coming back as chief deputy salary. I hope they are the hardest working men in the county for that kind of money we deserve it.

Because of who you are I understand your loyalty but I've done my homework and if you read my post again and do the math it will be over a hundred thousand, if he completes the year. Unlike you I can't really say job well done! We really don't need to go down memory lane do we?

FYI... for anyone who hasn't figured it out already, "Forthecitizens" aka "Themanishere" is Jake Garner. You can thus understand his vehement support and "insider information". He is correct about some of what he says: he did serve just six measly months for burning several occupied Morgan County homes and other structures to the ground.

A lot of the most convincing evidence in the case was "lost" somehow, thus the minor sentence. That surely must have been the fault of the ATF or out-of-town prosecutor. It couldn't possibly have happened inside the bounderies of our county. No... no way. >rolls eyes
