Completely predictable, as was mentioned from previous statements. I was surprised that Kivett didn't receive a unanimous vote the first round. I applaud Mayor Deckard for abstaining from the vote, a couple more should have done the same. I wish I could have been there. Once again the people of Martinsville loose because of small town cronyism. None the less, I hope Kivett does a good job for the citizens over the next year. The spring primary should be interesting.

I attended tonight’s caucus. I have to say that I am shocked by the outcome. By reading the previous posts, it appears that others agree.

I am curious as to how "Arse" predicted this outcome several days ago. Something smells foul in this entire event.

Why are you guys complaining things aren't going to change. If this Arthur character is who you are saying he is, then yes, he would have been the best choice. The only way we are going to change things in this town is to get out and VOTE!! Get involved, and speak up. You want someone like him in office then next time he runs vote him in, and you won't have to worry about the party dog and pony shows.

I hope this meeting was taped for replay on television. I'd like all the voters to see the quality of the candidates and their presentations.

No surprise here, this was all about the person most willing and best able to latch-on to the GOP teat and suckle quietly. Not Arthur's best quality.

Mr. Kivett lost me when he read from a prepared statement which touted his ability to "run a campaign" as his best quality. Just what our city council was missing.

I'm a bit confused which honorable precinct chair lost his taste for Arthur after the initial vote though. Do you think it's possible that one could have possibly had an epiphany between votes that Mr. Arthur wouldn't look good in bibbed overalls?

Anyway, nice job Republican leaders. You've managed in one 20 minute meeting to prove that every negative, stereotypical comment made toward the local GOP in the past few days is absolutely, indisputably 100% accurate.

Ed, I'd love to take credit for some amazing feat concerning my prediction, but it wouldn't be right. Ray Charles could see this one coming.

Don't forget the second half of my glimpse into the future. I have to get that right as well to claim any real ability and, if it does, I intend on asking Mayor Arthur to appoint me the official City Soothsayer.

I was going to elaborate on tonight’s Malay but Arse has already summed it up very accurately in his best piece of literary work yet. Thanks man.

You know, when you become City Soothsayer, you're going to need someone to carry around your crystal balls.......just sayin’.

Very sad. Maybe they could shoot a Dallas II series here?

Can't wait for Buskirk Deckard II primary in 2011.

You get what you get.

Everyone here not happy with the results should write a check to Mr. Arthur's campaign and promise to go door to door to get him elected in the primary. It takes money and lots of work by dedicated people to overthrow good old boy political machines. It can be done in Morgan county and HAS been done. You need look no further than the Mooresville school board and the Brooklyn town council. If they can do it then surely the people in Martinsville can do it too.

I want to thanks those on here for their support, it is heartfelt and appreciated. I know this blog was mentioned last night a couple of times at the caucus so I will assume your ideas and thoughts are reaching whom you want. I have to admit I don’t know who you all are and that is ok with me, I thought I knew who one of you were because of your stance on a State/Federal project but I found out last night I was wrong., having said all that, again thank you for your support.

I can’t tell you what happened before the caucus or what was done afterwards, but I can tell you about the caucus itself. Weather you like Martin Weaver or not….it was held the way it should have been; out in the open, well within the invited public eye. He did not have to let people attend but he did, he didn’t have to let people speak but he did. After the final vote he offered the public the opportunity to witness and validate the hand written ballots. Might have been a little over kill to prove a point but the offer was there. Lets be honest here, this caucus is the GOP, not the people electing this position. That’s not a negative comment; it’s just the process set forth to relieve these occasions when they arise. They aren’t necessarily looking for the most qualified person but the best representative of the Party. No bad intentions against Mr. Kivett, (what I know of Rick and Vicky is they are decent people and have always been kind towards me) but they got it right last night. I am a Republican and proud to be one, but I’m not the best ‘Party Republican’. I have and will take the majority of the people’s wishes over the political wishes. Bottom line is, elected officials serve the people first and Party second.

As far as me running for office, I gave my intent to run this spring for the Council when I sent my letters for Manley’s position. Arse…., I appreciate you premonitions of Mayor but I must clarify a couple of things. Number one, I hope to run for Mayor someday; as for the next election….I won’t run for any office to ‘get even’ or to ‘why. I’ll show them’, to run for an elected position as a pay back or any form of vengeance isn’t the reason to run. To use that in ones life as a mechanism to achieve anything is honestly counter productive. I won’t run for Mayor at this time because I really can’t; I’m getting close to retirement and I thought, as many had, at 55 I would probably get to. Because my retirement (like many others) took a hit through this economic turn, I have to wait probably another 4 years. I will never run for an office that I have to be financially dependent on. When you run for these positions because you need the money to survive, I believe you lose sight of the reason you should be there. But…. if I am ever elected Mayor and IF the position of ‘soothsayer’ is open, I will give you first shot at the application table….. And Ed… if Arse needs assistance of any kind while in transit …..he will have a small budget to pay his chosen help.

There is no reason for me to be sour about last night. It’s the process friends. I’ve won in the process and I’ve lost in the process. It’s America and that process is GREAT!! We are all winners because of it. I pray that it will stand forever!

What I ask now is entirely up to you. But I will ask…let’s temper ourselves and give Rick a chance. Let the process work.

Thanks, Doug

BRAVO Mr. Arthur! This is EXACTLY why we stand behind you. Thank you for your service and I'll be waiting with my support in your next political run for office.

PS. Hopefully I'll be retiring as well and I will volunteer my assistance to the City Soothsayer.

Mr. Arthur,

The news of your sitting out the next mayor's race disappoints me, but I fully understand and am very impressed by your not wanting to be dependent upon your office salary to survive. Few politicians can claim your philosophy and you should be proud.

With that being said, I'll also reiterate my belief that the local Grand Old Party is so full of itself that it need to be deflated & dismantled and rebuilt on the strong ethics and beliefs of humble conservatism.

One need no further proof than to visit the Morgan County GOP web page. On the front page, in the left column, your are able to expand your mind with either Chairman's Chatter or Chairman's Thoughts. Then, if you've got room left in your enlightenment chest, click on the OFFICIALS tab. Before your eyes will appear a 10 paragraph, 603 word biography on the county chairman (SURPRISE!), complete with 3 full color photographs of his majesty, Colonel Martin Weaver. Oh what a ride you are about to take as you peruse the story of Col. Marty's accomplishments. Please, be forewarned, despite the wonderous journey you're about to embark on, you will simultaneously be exposed to critical mass density levels of shameless narcissism. Narcissism so extreme that it, in my opinion, it defines the GOP of Morgan County regardless of the truth of the matter.

Click on the other information tabs and you'll get...simple one line statements or links to other web sights. No platform, no vision, no intentions, nothing.
For the love of all that's holy, the man's email address is marty@colonelweaver.com...does that not say enough?!

In my mind, this man is the one who prevented you from being appointed. In my heart I believe your failure to pay homage to him and "The Party" caused him to mastermind your rejection. As such, I believe he, and his selfishness, is the reason the residents of Martinsville were denied the best council representative to have applied.

Am I giving Mr. Weaver too much credit?...Not according to his biography.
