If it’s broken, throw it out

| pearl Thursday, January 27, 2011: 12:10 pm More from pearl | For all great educators out there, my post is not directed towards you. I appreciate what you do; the time, effort, passion and positive attitude you display. However, it is the great educators who would have passing standardized test scores for their pupils, so my preamble is quite unnecessary. Continuing on... I do not agree with the solution (i.e. charter schools, shutting entire schools down), but I do agree with the precision of the problem as stated by Mr. Daniels. If a teacher is not producing, they should leave. Simply put, if a teacher cannot produce passing test scores in the class room, they need to go. There are too many college educated people waiting on a teaching position to become available. There are also too many worldly educated people who could rise to the occasion and, dare I say it, do the job better than some with an education degree. These people would be more than happy to work 9 months a year to make the same pay as a police officer or fireman who works twelve. May I also state that these public servants are putting their lives on the line, while a teacher, with the exception of extreme cases (i.e. Columbine) are not. I, for one, am tired of hearing the excuses and negative attitudes from certain teachers. How many times do we need to hear about the poor family life of a student, and how this obstacle cannot possibly be overcome. It's an obstacle, yes, but it is not an impossible situation. To say that it is impossible, is to say that there is no hope for a child, and I refuse to believe such rubbish. Figure out ways to fit an entire day of learning into the school day. Don't assign homework, create incentives for attendance, make it fun to come to school. Do anything except bicker about how you can't do anything; or even worse, the lousiness of your job. If you hate it so much, please do everyone a huge favor and quit. If a man of business couldn't produce a certain amount of profit, he would be terminated from his position. Why should educators be any different? |
