Democrat Shawn Hogan files to run for Martinsville mayor

Interesting. I respect the part of Martinsville having a focused plan, accountability, and a sense of direction. I believe in the past administration Doug Arthur was ignorantly muted for suggesting that wise course of action. It's very difficult to get republicans closer to other republicans, let alone democrats and republicans. Example...Land owners, business owners, and the like will do simply anything within their measurable power to halt progress simply because they do not like a certain politician that is in office. Thus the citizenry suffers for it and nothing gets done. Recent pondering has almost convinced me that politically, Martinsville has no sense of itself inside and out. We have relied too much on the motto of "Let the chips fall were they lay" mixed with an adequate supply of carelessness. The common theme that has been a pleasure to witness build up over the past couple of years is..."Things need to improve" Those lost in their blissful slumber are starting to awake to the nonsense crashing around them! I hope this is the turning point... Arse, has your crystal ball showed promise for our future?...or is it still cloudy? |
| To The Point Sunday, February 20, 2011: 12:05 pm More from To The Point | Sunny: If you really check, I don't think Doug Arthur was ever muted over the subject. Perhaps Doug should have pursued it more vigorously, if he had a plan, and someone would have had to make a decision...either yes or no..either committee to study or let it drop. And, Sunny, if you have so many ideas (or vast knowledge on these subjects) why not appear at city meetings and make a presentation....??? That's where it starts...and ends. Just my opinion. |
| Sunny Sunday, February 20, 2011: 1:47 pm More from Sunny | To The Point, I assume that you are eluding to your knowledge as to who I am and how many meetings I have attended during my residency in Martinsville? I also...will estimate that you were present in the particular meeting(s) that the political agenda topic we are discussing was presented? It appears that we have differences with our alliances in the political factions of the city. I hope it is merely differences of opinion and not an ongoing shoving match between the two of us. |
| Doug Arthur Sunday, February 20, 2011: 4:55 pm More from Doug Arthur | To the point, If I may I will clarify this subject for you. A Councilperson cannot form committees on their own desires. They can suggest or request to preside over one or ask to be a member thereof. The President of the Council or Mayor creates and appoints committees for the Council. The reason for this is as you can imagine how many committees may develop by self-important agendas. As far as the meeting on a short/long term plan for Martinsville, yes I did approach the mayor and Council on the subject. First, I have never thought myself as one with all the answers to all the questions. Having said that, yes I had many ideas I took to the Council, in the public forum (isn't that who we serve?) hoping to have everyone involved in the process. I believe debate on issues whether everyone agrees or not, brings out the best results for all. That’s what I did during my eight years on the Council. I was never a one man band. With having said that, I approached the Mayor and Council and stated we should have a short range and a long range plan for the City. I specifically mention a 5 year and a 20 year plan. The response I got was; from the Mayor and at least 4 other Councilmember’s was and I'll quote. “we may not be here in 5-10-20 years." now I paraphrase, we may not get elected next time. Someone can come in and change it. You don't have to believe me, like I've said before, these meeting are recorded. You can get a copy of the recording upon request. If you have any question for me or I can assist you in anything else please contact me, I'm more than happy to help. I hope my response has helped clear this subject up. Take care, Doug |
| Danny Stewart Sunday, February 20, 2011: 6:31 pm More from Danny Stewart | To the point, I can verify Dougs posting. I was there on the night that he is refering to. He did mention putting a plan for the city together. However, the only reasonable conclusion that one could have possibly walked away with that night was that the mayor and several council members were not interested in doing so because those that were opposed to it gave the impression that if they were not going to be in charge then nobody should be allowed to do anything. That was the impression that I and several others walked away with. Whether or not if they actually felt that way, well, only they can say for sure. Now, my question to you is this: Do we really want to continue looking at the same two sides of the same coin? |
| To The Point Sunday, February 20, 2011: 6:40 pm More from To The Point | To SUNNY and DOUG ARTHUR: Sunny: Whether or not I know your identity, doesn't matter. I, in no way, meant to insinuate that our political alliances are different. And, I certainly have no intentions of participating in an ongoing shoving match with you. I was just stating that too many people are quick to "blog" without even being close to accurate on their knowledge of the subject. Just saying, "squeeky wheel" finally gets greased! It's good that you attend these meetings, voice your opinion, share ideas, etc. It's just sad that so many others do not, yet continually complaining and spewing unfounded information. To Doug Arthur: Doug, I'm well aware of your comments before the Mayor and Council. And, we all know you could not appoint your own committee (and I didn't suggest that), that, we all know, is the Mayor's job. I'm only saying....that, perhaps, you should have continually brought the subject up "Meeting after Meeting"...month after month...and then, just maybe...the NEWS Media would have no choice but report on such ideas and force some type of action. Your thoughts were positive and I believe go hand in hand with the present administration's thinking (and action). No problem here, just saying that if you get the chance again, don't give up! Just my opinion. |
| To The Point Sunday, February 20, 2011: 6:44 pm More from To The Point | To Danny Stewart: Now you really got me confused (but, maybe that's not hard to do)...what two sides of the same coin are you speaking of? |
| Doug Arthur Sunday, February 20, 2011: 8:04 pm More from Doug Arthur | I appreciate your comments, I could have went on and on for months, but being the only one speaking for the plan and with the majority in opposition, makes one wise enough to pick another hopefully positive subject to help the City. During my time on the Council I was cut short and ignored enough to know when to play my hand. The media was there at the meetings, you'll have to question them on why there was no reporting on it. jr As far as this administration looking toward the future, I agree with you. It's been a long time coming, but they have been moving in the right direction. |
| Owl Sunday, February 20, 2011: 9:59 pm More from Owl | Hey Doug, I hope you and To the Point don't mind me chiming in here. I remember on a few occasions when you were talking and the Mayor at the time would interrupt you and say "Anybody have anything else they want to bring up?" LOL It was all I could do to keep from laughing as I shook my head. I look forward to seeing you back in our service Mr. Arthur. |
| Doug Arthur Sunday, February 20, 2011: 10:17 pm More from Doug Arthur | Thank you Owl, I appreciate your kind words and your support, they both mean a lot to me. Take Care my friend, Doug |
