| martinsville native Friday, February 18, 2011: 1:49 pm More from martinsville native | I am a parent who lives in the East Middle district, but I chose to send my children to West. Nothing against East--BOTH schools are great. My children have excelled at West, and the teachers have made a positive impact in their lives. |

| 976 Friday, February 18, 2011: 5:18 pm More from 976 | I did that with my daughter. I felt the environment at West was not overly conducive to learning, and there were too many teachers there that had simply forgotten why they became teachers in the first place. It's all about them - not the students. Not to mention (just as a personal observance of mine), that several of the teachers at West are "old school" and, in my opinion, are not open to new ideas/styles of teaching, or, if they are, they are incapable of pulling them off just because it's so out of character that the kids would probably think it was a joke. Most stick to the same style they had 25 years ago when I had these same teachers. East seems to have more of the younger teachers who are bound to be more in tune with today's kids because there isn't a mile wide generational gap that is impossible to bridge when dealing with today's rebellious-natured youngsters. I say out with the old, in with the new! If possible, force retirement & get some fresh faces for the West kids to look at - people who can inspire & drive these kids to WANT to learn & do their best! This is WAY too important & it would be a travesty to allow the bunch of old bitties at West to continue to fail! |
| 976 Friday, February 18, 2011: 5:24 pm More from 976 | & that includes their principal, who is a devestatingly horrible example for any child to be following! |

| 976 Friday, February 18, 2011: 5:33 pm More from 976 | She said 19 percent of its 585 students are in special education, 62.4 percent are on free or reduced lunch, 5 percent are homeless and 21 percent are transient. GRRR - sounds like what they are saying is they don't have the ability to teach special education students properly...and maybe they're implying that poor kids don't want to learn?...and maybe that homeless kids are (what? impossible to teach when they don't have a home to do homework at?) - I don't even get this one...and the transient kids are just all over the place so they can't focus? - I don't understand what ANY of that has to do with trying to teach a child who is in front of you for the time being. Stop worrying about the child's circumstances outside of school & treat them like a human being while you can & show them you care! |
| Liberty Friday, February 18, 2011: 5:36 pm More from Liberty | 976, How did you get the chioce of schools. Wasn't there a residentual boundry requirment or is that not the case here. ? :) |
| 976 Friday, February 18, 2011: 5:48 pm More from 976 | I called Jerry Sanders directly & asked if she could transfer - bypassed the authorities at both schools entirely before they even knew this was something I wanted. Generally speaking, from what I have heard, as long as there is not an overcrowding problem (empty seats in classrooms), they will accommodate your request if it's for a good reason. My daughter was truly having a HUGE problem with a certain teacher who just plain didn't like her. Not sure if she had good reason - maybe my daughter had disrespected her one too many times - who knows. But it took over & my daughter felt targeted after a while by more than just that teacher. Even the most severe discipline issues (which was not my daughter by a long shot) should not ever result in kids feeling targeted. I will say my son had the same teacher a few years later, the teacher had no clue he was "her" sister because I advised him not to mention it, and all went well & he stayed at West. |
| Liberty Friday, February 18, 2011: 6:07 pm More from Liberty | 976, I'm glad you had a choice. I know what happens when you stand-up to a NEA trained teacher. You are targeted and attacked and they do become a pack of dogs. I'm hope they never find out about your son. Be careful because after you described the one changing schools, that pack of union dogs may be able to go through the records and figure out who's who. Your son may be in danger. Folks, I have never seen a NEA'er ever accept responsibility for anything . Period. That's what the union is all about. It's a shame for some who may read this to have to see. If I am blessed to be poor the arrogant NEA GEC system will say I'm dumb and to stupid for them to teach. If my mom and dad home was foreclosed on I then have become a burden on the school and now am blamed for them being in trouble. My fault. HOW SICK AND UNCONSCIONABLE THIS GEC SYSTEMS ABUSE OF OUR CHILDREN HAS BECOME. CAN'T WAIT TILL IT'S ALL SHUT DOWN AND REPLACED WITH PROFESSIONALS AND NOT JUST WANNABEES UNION CHARITY CASES WHO PAT THEMSELVES ON THE BACK ON THE PUBLIC SQUARE. What an insult to the community. Under the new system it only takes 51% of honest parents to change a school to an accountable school with teachers whose focus is on the children and not themselves. Praise God for the majority of honest parents in Indiana coming to the rescue of the children who doesn't have the choice now to change schools. Peace :) |
| 976 Friday, February 18, 2011: 6:34 pm More from 976 | Thankfully, my son is now in high school/in another town/in another county & thriving academically & learning so much more than my daughter did in the 'ville! They can't touch him! As for the lower portion of your last post, Liberty - yes, sadly, that is EXACTLY how it works! Best advice I can offer is move to the nearest town either south or north on 37. |
| Arse Friday, February 18, 2011: 9:00 pm More from Arse | 976, Yep, sounds like everything was totally the teacher's fault. Your daughter was victimized and you probably should sue...somebody, no everybody! And we wonder why kids are the way they are. Calgon take me away. |
