Dear Mr. Editor,
Some ground rules: We agree not to edit or alter your comments at any time.

WHY? Why do you feel the necessity to add to a person's letter to the editor. It is not called "An Edited Version of this Letter to the Editor." It is called, "Letter to the Editor." Why do you feel the need to add information. I looked at all 25 of the Letter to the Editor that can be viewed on the on-line, I found ONLY ONE "Editor's Note"......And it is on this one. Convenient. Does typing "Editor's Note" make okay to add to someone else's work. Just wondering.

I spoke with Marti about the letter and gained her permission to add the editor's note to the end, so as to be clear for our readers who she is.

Brian,
Good job with the "Editor's note".

Why,
It wouldn't have been necessary if the writer had've added that to the letter herself. Editor's note is meant to clarify info for the reader who might not otherwise know who the writer is/what position or office they might hold. This is important info considering the subject/content of the letter don't you think?
