No selfish or overpaid teachers here

I have 2 children who were former students at South Elementary. I can tell you as a parent who volunteered for room parties, field trips, and other events I have nothing but respect for ANY teacher. I have seen first hand the types of situations they must deal with on a daily basis, I personally could not and do not want to trade places with them. Our family has had the pleasure of meeting some great people both inside and outside of the classroom. I have spoken with teachers who have literally brought me to tears with their words. Now that my children have moved on to middle and high school I continue to meet some great people. I'm not talking about 1 or 2 teachers but about several. I have taken the time to let those teachers know how much they impacted our lives as a student/parent. People are quick to jump on the backs of the teachers for being complacent/lazy but I truly think the PARENTS play a huge role in the education of our children. Instead of finger pointing maybe you should be thinking am I doing everything I can do at home and what can I do to help. |

| tdmyers Tuesday, March 15, 2011: 6:43 pm More from tdmyers | I am so glad to have read your letter, Mr. Jackson! As a substitute teacher, I have been in several local schools and the teachers our children are learning from are kind, hard working, unselfish individuals. I have three children who are students at South Elementary as our family lived on Southview Drive pre-flood. Since then, we have moved to the other side of town, yet I feel blessed because Mike Bodine has allowed my children to stay at South. I have worked as a parent volunteer in the classroom, on parent/teacher committees, and on field trips. The staff at South (and other area schools) truly have the students' best interest at heart. To say teachers are lazy and overpaid is an uneducated statement to say the least. Each lawmaker, parent, and any other nay-sayer should have to substitute in the average classroom for one day! MSD of Martinsville has amazing teachers and I am proud to say that we are Artesians! |
