Clarence has got it right.Lots of people not in unions see no benefit to them. They do not realize that because they exist others have benefits that are because of unions.I have health benefits. Other trucking companies like mine do not because they have no union. My boss still makes a good profit. But not at the expense of his employees.

I could go on forever... But the fact is that those of us who "pay dues" set the wages for the rest who "don't" pay dues. I just wish people would realize that outsourcing jobs for cheaper labor is the biggest driver of our Budget problems. Low paying jobs don't pay much in taxes.

Change is inevitable. Unions played a very important historical role in our country and could have a place in the future. Today, when I think of unions the first thing that comes to mind is a picture of people who are fighting for wages, benefits, charging union dues and complaining about large corporations (many of which employ union members). I would like to hear some examples of unions who are successfully able to shift their priorities and focus on how collectively they can and will provide better service, quality and value than labor in other countries or non-union counterparts. It is a very competitive world that we live in today. Like it or not. Workers are a commodity. Like it or not. For unions to continue to be relevant, they need to change focus and direction. Like it or not.

Jane, well-put. In a changing world, holding on to purpose, structure, and vision (that may well have served as intended) will likely lead to death. The catch phrase of the late 90's was "re-inventing". Successful organizations do that purposefully.

Jane I DO work for a union like you described. They exist. That's why it strikes a nerve with me when people view us all like the ones that have gone overboard.
