I tell people all the time that i live in one of the safest places in this country. This is so sad. What is happening to this world. My daughter is a teacher and i cant imagine the stress these kids teachers have to live with everyday. God bless all the families they will need lots of support.

We wonder what's happening... Well, we've taken God out of the schools, we don't want Jesus around our kids (until someone gets shot, then we pray like crazy). We've taken discipline out of our schools (can't paddle the kids, it might hurt their self esteem). We've turned over our education system to liberals in government for the last fifty years. Many parents have become lazy and disinterested (a product of the government run education system from the last fifty years). What do you expect to happen?

Oh, waaah! Someone clicked the negative button on my comment. I'm crushed! I guess you really don't like to hear the truth. It takes a lot of guts to hide behind a fake user name and anonymously click rating buttons.

I agree with Ron. Put God and Jesus back in all schools.

It is a very sad day for Martinsville, parents, schools and children. It is terrible that anger and emotions can build to the point that a child decides to use a gun. Parents and other adults need to keep their guns locked and the key in a safe place. Most teens are not mature enough to have access to guns. If everyone would be more responsible for things at home maybe it would be safer. I know that some kids are mature enough to hunt during season and in a safe area and in this instant guns can be ok. There are classes for this and they should not hunt without a responsible adult. In the late 40's when the high school was located on Sycamore street fights broke out on the corner about every day on (Smokey Corner) just a black eye was the results. That was the violence then.

My heart is broken for Martinsville. Everyone involved needs our prayers today -- not our criticism. As we move down the road away from this tragedy, we should pray for needed changes in our system so this type of thing does not happen in the future. We should also pray for the guidance to know what WE can do to change things in a positive, constructive way, including the freedom to worship our God without censorship.

I pray this young boy will survive and recover. I hope the shooter is tried as an adult and given a stiff penalty. Moddlecoddling is what allowed him to get to this point. God bless all the innocent children as they deal with this latest tragedy.

Sixteen and in middle school? Is that a reporting error?

I have lived all over the world via the Military and I have lived in numerous small communities in the US and Martinsville is as nice a town as you will ever find! It isn't perfect but the parents and students in Martinsville are as good as it gets and I am sorry to hear this news story as it will give many people a reason to slam Martinsville when it doesn't deserve to be slammed. I lived in Martinsville for 10 years and loved it then and still do.
