....I do have this question. How did this student or ex-student get into the school that he is expelled from? Why with all of the so called security measures in post 9-11 America in place are they(the students) going in so many doors, he accessed a door on the West side by the cafeteria and no one noticed this? So the security measures failed at the school?

Hopefully, his parents had several of them, like any responsible American head-of-household. Unfortunately, he was never taught any respect for human life, proper firearms usage and safety, or anger management... like responsible parents would have done.

a professional public relations specialist, said they were dealing with a unique situation because it had happened at a school. He said federal and state law prohibited any release of information about students in the system and they would be unable to take any questions.

When they get to the bottom of this it won't be pretty but neither is the GEC's these children are sentenced to.

What ever the bottom of this will look like, it will be more than enough to rescue your children from a failed system.

Home-School, private school, force the state to convert this failed union-government-run system to be replaced with a private charter system that has to care enough not to call whistle-blowing children liars. That really the scariest thing I take away from this for all those who trust the GEC's with your childs minds, souls and bodys.

Hey Liberty....it also happens in your beloved home schooling with those of faith...

http://www.imperfectparent.com/topics/2011/03/02/12-year-old-possible-suspect-shooting-spree-kills-parents-leaves-2-siblings-critical/

Colorado police are reporting today that a 12 year old boy is in police custody after he dialed 911 yesterday, to report his parents shot. Police are not yet saying the boy is a suspect but suggest that charges will likely be forthcoming. The parents were killed in the attack and two young children, believed to be his sister and brother, ages 5 and 9, are currently in critical condition. The 12 year old son of Charles and Marilyn Long called 911 and said that 3 people had been shot. When police arrived, they found the parents dead and two young children in “dire” condition. It is not yet known if the children were shot too or they suffered a different kind of trauma.

According to Channel 9 News, Colorado, the Longs had 7 children total. Four of whom are grown and living in their own homes. The younger children still residing with the Longs were not attending public school but rather home-schooled instead. An investigator for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation who is partnering with local police to determine what happened said that the boy is being referred to the district attorney for formal charges.

The boys pastor and neighbors describe the possible suspect as religious, church going and outgoing. Channel 7 ABC News paints a picture of a disciplined family, explaining the fathers dedication to eating healthy extended to a blog he wrote about nutrition and keeping fit. He seemed to enjoy experimenting with different kinds of vegetable and fruit smoothies. He also wrote about how challenging it was to stay healthy given that he was a truck driver for Frito-Lay. They also report that the parents listed the Bible as their favorite book on their personal Facebook page.

Religion, morals, values, respect... All of these things need to start at home so that our children have a firm foundation when they step out of their own front door. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that God belongs everywhere in our lives including the public school system, I just don't think we should be relying on our educators to raise our children with the morals and values that should start at home.

Greg,

I agree with you. Guns don't kill people; people kill people. I think we should go a step further and say that responsible parents keep their guns locked up so emotional, immature teenagers don't get ahold of them and shoot somebody.

Now I have even more questions. Who is the legal owner of the gun used in the shooting? How did this kid get ahold of it? Steal it? What are the laws in this county about having guns in a home with minor children? Do they require the gun to be locked up? If so will charges be filed against the person who didn't have his gun secured? If not then maybe this SHOULD be a law.

While this unfortunate event is troubling, so are many of the posts here. Taking pot shots at the parents, the school, guns, society....on and on. I don't know the youngster who got shot nor the shooter. But it seems to me that the only difference between the shooter and the rest of us is that he is exposed. Not that we have shot someone, but all of us have made mistakes that if exposed would be somewhere on the spectrum of embarassing to shocking. It is called sin. We are born bent that way.

I pray that at some point, the young lad will thank God for what has happened to him as a result of his actions. Too often it takes a really bad situation to get our attention. God can use this situation.

For the youngster who was shot, I hope he is able to work through to forgiveness what has happened to him. If he had any part of escalating the events leading up to the shooting, I hope he can learn from that also.

For the rest of us, we should be agents of healing, not trying to use an isolated incident to pontificate and point fingers at our favorite whipping-boy.

How do you begin to sort through the causes, failures, and future preventions here?

We want to blame someone else aside from the young man who committed this horrible act. Be it from video games, to movies, to his mental stability/capacity and family history. The second amendment being called into question. There is even the faculty and staff being blamed.

I can't see a rational mature adult in the position of principle not adhering to the warnings from students of such a nature in this day and age. I could be wrong and it will come out in the investigation. Of course there are people that think President Bush knew that 9/11 was going to happen as well.

How do you stop something like this from happening again?

I understand there are a lot of upset members of the community, parents, and staff and rightfully so. It's tragic. But sometimes evil is just simply what it is evil.

So what do you do? Make schools like the TSA security at the airport at the entrance doors and scratch the right to bare arms from the constitution?

I just don't know.
