Phelps to be charged with five felonies

You fail to judge your own heart and feel qualified to judge others and hold them accountable. I will hold you accountable for your actions, this is not a problem. I promise. |
| mcbacker Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 9:30 am More from mcbacker | Just wondering Hoosier if that was your son in the hospital with two bullet holes would you still feel the same way? |
| A Hoosier Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 9:37 am More from A Hoosier | Mcbacker, I would. As you should be aware, the parents of young Jackson have shown this and their example should be followed. |
| LovesMooresville Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 9:44 am More from LovesMooresville | Thank you for holding me accountable "A Hoosier", but I will let God do that. You just worry about yourself & your children. Thanks for the offer though. Sounds alittle "judgemental" you telling me I'm not judging my own heart. Trust me God knows my heart, so I don't need your help. |
| A Hoosier Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 9:49 am More from A Hoosier | You are so welcome. Don't forget God's son was executed by a crowd demanding justice. Look to emulate the Jackson family. |
| jon Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 9:50 am More from jon | A Hoosier..."Their irresponsible actions do not make them more mature, hopefully wiser, but not more mature. You are seeking revenge. Shame on you." Where do I start?? I was born and raised in Martinsville and I am proud to say that!! First off, what Michael Phelps did was way beyond an "irresponsible action" This conflict between Phelps and Jackson supposedly blew up Wednesday afternoon at a dance at West Middle School. If thats the case, then Phelps had time to think about what he was doing before he showed up at West Middle School Friday morning. Its not like there was an arguement and in a fit of rage he pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger. This was a planned thing. The school administration cannot be blamed for what happened. There is only so much they can do. If a person has it in their mind to do something, it will happen. Even if they did have an advanced warning this would happen and they had police and faculty outside Friday morning, Phelps could have seen it and left and found Chance Jackson somewhere else or came back to the school another day. "Seeking revenge" I do not believe that is the case. Please tell me A Hoosier.... what would you think the right thing to do here is? Kids these days do things without fear of consequences. When I was growing up I knew there were consequences for all actions....why?....because my parents taught me that. I didnt fear my parents....I respected them! Alot of people these days do not believe in spanking kids anymore, and if you ask me, thats a big part of the problem. People spanked their kids for many many years and teenage crime and drug use was not nearly as high as it is today. If they do not charge Phelps to the fullest extent of the law it will once again show todays kids that there is no consequence for wrong doing....even PREMEDITATED ATTEMPTED MURDER!! I do not have anger toward the Phelps boy, in fact I do feel sorry for him. His parents failed him miserably. Even though his parents may have failed him, he has been in school long enough that he has been taught the difference between right and wrong. Schools discuss world events. I'm pretty sure somewhere along the way Phelps was taught is is wrong to try to kill another human being. I also believe Michael Phelps parents should share in the responsibility for what he did. They failed their son and should have to answer to that fact. I know there will be alot of people who do not agree with me and I respect that. I am just one person voicing my opinion as are the ones who oppose what I have said. Thank you |
| A Hoosier Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 10:13 am More from A Hoosier | Jon, not only do you wish to punish young Phelps but his parents. With an ideology such as yours not only would Jesus have been executed but his Father as well. Your childhood has NOTHING to do with the way children are raised today. Back in the day.....blah, blah, blah. Children were abused back in the day. They were beaten, sent away for being an embarassment, on and on. Being 15 does not make one an adult. Adults are mature responsible, compassionate (hopefully), empathetic (hopefully), and completely aware of the consequences of their behavior (hopefully). To assume that this very young person was able to comprehend completely his actions is to fail him. Ask yourself were you as mature at 15 as you are today, seek the truth. Young Phelps will have consequences. To lock him away as a adult would not be justice but a tragedy. |
| Liberty Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 10:45 am More from Liberty | he has been in school long enough that he has been taught the difference between right and wrong The union-government school ? Folks, young people his age today are being taught by our government the glory and honor in shooting and killing young men. The same government that controls his education is also actively recruiting young men to go and kill young men. It's taught as glory an honor. Well guess what folks, honor is the same thing used in everyday disagreements with young folks. In a little over 2 short years the act of cold blooded murder will be ok right ? The Bible says just the opposite about killing so, he can't reconcile Gods Word and the governments glorification of killing. So I guess we taught him not to trust the Bible right? Does anyone really think a child's mind really processes things like an adult especially when misguided or non guided ? If you do you haven't a clue. I only want the law followed and not try to change it to please a vengeful community. Follow the law and don't hold a lynching. Yes, they do have the ability to send him to a correctional youth ranch with house parents and a system designed to rehabilitate young people. The other option is to send him into a adult prison and pay the daily medical bills for having his rectum sewed up while making a monster that will get out in 20 years that will certainly kill and seek revenge on the whole community that torchered him. There's our choices. I can only think of what Jesus said on how we receive forgiveness when he said. "For if you forgive others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you your sins" So once we deal with forgiveness we can move along and concentrate on this child's rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is not sitting in jail or a juvenile center. Let see, the school is on academic probation because it failed the test at being an accredited school. So it's kinda not even a real school. Not making fun but just pointing out some facts. So then : Phelps and Jackson supposedly blew up Wednesday afternoon at a dance at West Middle School. Maybe the school flunked the school test and are on probation because they are dancing instead of teaching. This should be Martinsville's first Charter school. There's some solutions to act on. . |

| artie1958 Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 2:54 pm More from artie1958 | Liberty,....REALLY! I read your post...Iam sympathetic to the opinion you have towards Public Schools....But, did you know there are many schools on academic probation? Not just WMS...sad as it might be, it is a fact! I am speaking of schools around the county! Liberty, do you know why WMS is on probation? WMS student scoring on their ISTEP! Which ISTEP itself is another "Monster" we as parents should question! I have! My son carries a 3.7 GPA and only passed the ISTEP 1x, by a hair! WMS is getting hit with these kids whom should have been targeted in elementary school! They are just "passed on". WMS receives kids with 3rd and 4th grade reading levels, and they are suppose to perform a miracle? The majority of West pulls from low income (like it or not people, it is a fact) families. I cannot quote the percentage, but if you go to the school board notes from February...the percentage would astound you of the children whom are listed transient. KIDS WHO DO NOT HAVE A PERMANENT HOME! How do you teach and/or help kids who do not get support from home! That is not a reflection on WMSl! Why are the Elementary schools not being held accountable? Nothing is perfect Liberty! Even private and charter schools have the same issues as public schools! I really get tired of you bashing our school system, and you struck a nerve with me...blaming a school's academic probation for a heinous crime committed by a "lost soul" whose home life was lacking. This young man will suffer! Either by the courts or his own innerself! It is ultimately between him and God. Not the school system, or us. |
| Liberty Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 3:40 pm More from Liberty | Thanks artie1958, I see I've stuck a cord with you but not for the reason you think. You seem to be blaming the same system I have studies and posted about for years. I do it and bring solutions for it. Most who find it in their best interest seem to fight any solutions and continue to support the teachers union who orders our state legislators to go awol and shut down the government to prevent solutions. I get flack because I hold the parents and the union government system accountable for their own failures. Go Figure. Now back to us being in agreement. You said :"Liberty, do you know why WMS is on probation? WMS student scoring on their ISTEP! Which ISTEP itself is another "Monster" we as parents should question! I have! My son carries a 3.7 GPA and only passed the ISTEP 1x, by a hair! WMS is getting hit with these kids whom should have been targeted in elementary school! They are just "passed on". WMS receives kids with 3rd and 4th grade reading levels," You just illustrated that the schools standards are so much lower than the states that accredits them as a school. Yes I understand you blaming the school system for not only NOT being able to educate 5th and 6th graders past 3rd and 4th grade levels but then WMS then has to lower their standards so low to pass them on. Yes, the lowering of both the grade school and middleschool's standards to accomidate these undereducated children ( or poor children as you referr to them?) has brought them to the point of not being able to meet the state standard for a middle school. So we agree. But just look at what you just did. Instead of dealing with the problem you yourself just ilistrated to blamed it on the state for not lowering their standards to keep low with the local school system. ? Now this isn't nothing new. It started back in the early seventies, pushing children on, not to make them feel dumb ( even though it's not them but the system) but here is where we have come to. By the whole country lowering there standards and making d students get b's, we now rank 38th in the world in education. Do you know what that mean ? If our 10th grade children were to enter a school in do you have any idea what grade the would be in ? Don't worry, our government is also blaming this on others in the world and how we are judged. Sound familiar ? The answers are right in front of our nose. We only have to ACT upon them. Peace and God bless :) |
| artie1958 Wednesday, March 30, 2011: 4:22 pm More from artie1958 | Liberty...I did not call the kids at WMS "poor"...I was stating a fact of the enviornment some of the kids come from.....can effect the way they perform at school! I by all means was not implying they are not capable of exceeding expectations! Like any situation at home....you either rise above it or become it! I feel very sad for kids who need that "Extra" little involvement in their lives. Some get it and some don't. We have very good parents and staff at WMS, and any child that wants to go to college....doesn't seem to have a problem acquiring the SAT to get in! They must be doing something right! It seems the ones who have the most problems stand out to us. There are a lot of kids that move on successfully from MHS to further their educations! You have a lot of valid points and sometimes we forget there are failures in everything! Including the systems we are most dedicated to defending! It is My personal belief.....It starts at home...everyone has their own opinion and that is why we are different. A lot of successful people in this world had little or no education. |
