21. Not 17 and 364 days. Maybe longer depending on maturity.

Questions? Why did the administration bring the elementary children into the situation? The shooting occurred at 7:20 a.m., why didn't the administration notify the bus transportation service not to pick up the elementary children? Why was there not a message sent out via radio and news media as if it were a snow day? Why were teachers ushering kids inside the building's when parents were dropping them off? Why not post a teacher at the drop off area and let them know school was canceled? The answer to all these questions, the administration didn't want to add another day of required attendance at the end of the year!

It seems when a tragic event occurs blame is thrown around. Things happen to the best of us, we are human and we all make mistakes. We should just do as the victims family requested and pray for all parties concerned.

A Hoosier...no, no egoism here. I, like you, have no use for self righteous people nor do I think I have all the answers. I just think that too many of us tend to look for blame elsewhere rather than start with "Is there anything I could do to prevent this from happening again?" For instance, Lila has some very good and honest questions. I am unsure as to why some thigs happened the way they did. I know the first message from Dr Furniss said that if you have walkers in elementary school, feel free to keep them home. Every plan looks good on paper. It isn't until you implement that plan that you see how it really works. I have no doubts that the school system is reviewing it and seeing where they could do things better. By the way, I appreciate ALL the comments and dialogue mmy letter has generated, not just the ones that agree. This is how changes get made for the better. Let's hope dome of our leaders read these as well.

Lila, the reason the children were being ushered in was because the shooter was still running....it was for the safety of the children. as for not notifying the elementary students/bus drivers.....there was a west student with two bullets in his stomach laying on the floor, and i believe that was where their attention was focused....as for you thinking about making up a day missed....i don't believe anyone with a grain of sense, would have been thinking about that....

Skip, No my post wasn't directed to you at all. I will have to address one misconception you may have concerning about what God's word says about those who teach children children.

Jesus says in Matthew: "Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven and whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!"

Anyone and everyone will be held responsible for a child's sin. At least all those who have any influence over them. That's why I try to hold the parents who are responsible for teaching their own, responsible, for the child's sake and not thrown into a system that teaches secular humanism that will lead them to sin.

You see, if we don't actually live by the words God teaches us in His Word then our children will immediately note that and they too won't. Has anyone ever though what go's through a child's mind while school concerning why their parents want them to learn what they actually are hearing ? They will never share that with you but it will set the standards in life including their trust in their parents words and faith.

Peace Skip :)

Great observation LilaMae, you won't get any real answer but you might get an excuse or two. I agree to bring children into this threat and placing them at risk doesn't make sense. That should have been the first thing considered. I wasn't there but if what you say is true then you have a right to and answer as do all the parents they are blowing of and calling names to discredit. So fare on tv the administrator call a bunch of students and parents lairs. For anyone whose gone through the training to recognize potential harmful situations for your children that id=s the first thing that should raise a red flag when an adult who you entrust your child to call them liars. I'm sure we'll know more with all the potential lawsuits that are likely. I say a solution is to make WMS the first Charter school in Martinsville.

Peace :)

Blessed - Even though the situation was dire, administration is or should be trained to consider the safety of all students. Bringing them into an already unstable environment is not a safety precaution in my book. As for my comment concerning adding a day, I have had more than one TEACHER, not parent, TEACHER, within the district, state the administration did not want to add a day to the end of the year. I think those teachers are involved on a much higher level than all of us out here looking in and know what the truth is. Jus sayin....

Make no mistake about it, parents are responsible for raising their children. That might not include providing in total their education. Over the ages, parents have sent their children to "school", whether it be a tutor, a private school, a church school, or the public school. Those are choices, all of which need to remain just that, choices.
