Furniss said in his message to parents. “I want to assure you that we take the safety of your children very seriously and we look forward to seeing them return to the classroom on Monday.”

I sincerely hope that this isn't comparable to the consideration of safety he showed to others as he drove 61 in a 35 while intoxicated.

You know, I slammed him pretty hard for that one myself, but now is not the time. Everyone's focus should first & foremost be on communicating with your own kids at home to ensure they are equipped to deal with their emotions in a positive manner and working with the school system on whatever else it takes to prevent students & staff from having to ever deal with another Michael Phelps situation. If kids in any way become aware that parents are doubting the school system's ability to deal with this effectively, that is not a step toward making them feel safe at school again.

Very well said 976....we have all made mistakes, and should now be supporting our school system and administrators. Does every comment need to be negative...can we not be more supportive....

The problem isn't intelligence or skills but just the lack self confidence of those who were schooled by a union and government designed to make you dependent on both  for an income and not having the self confidence to be free thinkers and do things for themselves.  You don't need to be a teacher to home school because home schooling isn't about teaching, it's about learning. To completely different different things. Most teachers have a hard time understanding that and so remains confused and perpetuates their union propaganda and the force feeding of soon to be forgotten data down the unwilling minds of our children. Ever here a teacher say they sometimes feel they are wasting their time ? -that's why-  because the force feeding system they teach is basically doing just that and the scores prove it.  The ones who understand this usually will quit and home-school their children.

Only the most arrogant of teachers will claim they have some special knowledge and that someone else can't open up a book or curriculum material and understand.  A union-government teacher didn't go to school to be experts on the subject they will end-up teaching. Most remember very little and a good percentage ends up teaching subjects out side of there original majors. A union-government teacher earns the degree in how to teach the union-government system not the subject. It's not about academics, which explains the failed performance of the union-government schools vs other forms of education.  So since the last thing you would do in home schooling is to teach that system style and in fact you want to teach exactly the opposite ,  a teaching degree provides nothing and explains why the data shows no measurable different from a highly degreed vs a no degreed parents child's achievement. What the degree does do is it can provides the emotion of confidence just to get one to start. After a parent starts they usually go through the mental adjustment period of trying to forget everything they remember about the union-government failure.

Going to a home-school convention looking around , asking questions and listening to some speaking events will give you more of that emotion of confidence than years and a $100 thousand dollars of debt to the university could ever do..... OOP's  did I mention money ?    nah...... money has no power to trump principles in society.....no way.   Education industry ? what's that ?  You're nuts.... you're just making things up.  Are you going to expect me to think their are people who would singularly promote a poorly performing system on everyone's children because of money ?.... What motive could they possible have to design a system to the self confidence from a student to ever be able to teach their own ?.....That's nut.....you must be some kind of conspiracy nut....seen any flying saucers lately?...right........ So what if the colleges make $100,000.00 per student.( $58 Billion nationwide annually)...plus a commission from credit card companies to distribute credit cards, but turns out the lowest level of education.........so what if the teachers union will take $30,000.00 ( $84 Billion nationwide) out of a teachers check over their career and still leaves the wanting in retirement ?......so what if all the others profits $ 1.13 Trillion off of the system that  doesn't mean anyone could have any other motive.......right ?........ No one would risk a child's life or deceive parents for just $1.5 Trillion dollars......stop making things up.

So.....you say "if homeschooling provides such a higher rate of character and academic excellence without the ~ $1.5 trillion dollars of the BIG education industry profits taken from parents then why wouldn't all those principled people and leaders  do the right thing and teach and promote Homeschooling ?............you just are being clinical about thing you nut........so what if U.S. Department of Education says that between 6 percent and 10 percent of public school children across the country have been sexually abused or harassed by school employees and teachers........ my child won't be the one in ten so stop the spreading of this unpublicized information..........no I don't feel funny when teachers call my child a lair............you just must be a very angry person trying to make all of us happy parents upset...........you are just a conspiracy nut.  Besides my elected representatives who get over $50 Million per year from big education lobby will make sure my child's interest is number one.........just mind your own business ...there isn't any reason for me to change anything.    I love my child and would never think for a second not to trust their lives to the union-government education complex.
