City park board mulls strategies for improvements plan

It would be a huge , costly mistake to remove this structure that I believe was built by "The Civilian Conservation Corps" during the great depression. What are these people thinking? Now the basketball courts have become virtually unusable and the kids have recently taken there game play to central school, which I hear is causing some problems. They just need the goals replaced and maybe seal coat the asphalt and paint some lines on it.This wouldn't be a $150,000 project. All the old shelter houses should stay. They are solid structures that have stood the test of time and they have great fireplaces.I'm sure any new structures would not have such fireplaces, which are very nice on colder days and of course Santa likes them there when he comes every year!If these buildings were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the great depression as I suspect, they should be of historical significance. They were built by the greatest craftsmen in our country during a time when money was hard to come by.Even a $150,000 shelter house built today would not hold up like these structures. Please don't have them be torn down !Just fix the basketball goals for pete's sake and don't take 3 years to do it. |
| BeenThereDoneThat Thursday, May 12, 2011: 5:13 am More from BeenThereDoneThat | All it takes is a drive past Mooresville's park on a nice day to see what a real park should look like. Parking lots packed, parents and children playing, people walking, jogging and enjoying themselves. Heaven forbid Martinsville spend some money to improve the quality of life here. There is nothing "new" in Martinsville recreation-wise for folks to enjoy. You have a YMCA that hasn't expanded in decades, even with a minor remodel of the weight room it's still a cramped and rundown building with the same equipment that was in it 20 years ago. The park isn't any better with the delapidated playground and courts and ball field. $150,000 for a shelter house? Are you kidding me? You can build a 4000 sq.ft. house for that kind of money! You have multiple large restaurant and industrial buildings sitting idle in this town along with many more small business type buildings empty as well. Coincidence? I don't think so. You have to spend money to make money, patches only work for so long. Our great John Wooden once said "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?" |
