| Patriot Wednesday, May 11, 2011: 11:48 am More from Patriot | Wow it's all about football. To heck with all other sports. lets spend all our money and attention on a new field for a coach who cant get out of sectionals. I wonder if this guy was the baseball coach would we have gotten a new stadium? Anything else he needs? |
| swim parent Wednesday, May 11, 2011: 1:07 pm More from swim parent | Unbelievable. The football team receives new turf to play on and the swim team has to hold a lap a thon every year to raise money for their sport with each team member expected to raise at least $400. That money is used for equipment and yet each swimmer has to pay for 1/2 the cost of team suit and provide all their own practice/competition gear. I agree with Patriot - this for a team that couldn't make it out of sectionals, yet girls swim team was undefeated this year. MHS needs to even the "playing field" for ALL sports! |
| Patriot Wednesday, May 11, 2011: 5:14 pm More from Patriot | My kids are done with sports but we still follow them. Sounds like we need to keep this "front page" and hold people accountable. Remember school board members are elected as well! I have been told a hundred times about the money where it came from, it would have been better served spread out amongst a lot of sports teams, rather than one! |
| word Thursday, May 12, 2011: 8:51 am More from word | how many people come out and pay to watch a girls swim meet? boys football creates revenue therefor gets more money for nicer things. football has, and always will be more popular then swimming. it might not be fair but its the truth. |
| ButlerGrad Thursday, May 12, 2011: 10:05 am More from ButlerGrad | As someone who is quite impartial to either side, one has to consider that the Athletic Department is a business. Swimming doesn't EXIST without football's revenue, and regardless of how many games they win, Martinsville High School football is your bread-winner of a HS ath. dept. Swim Parent, for someone who seems to be confident in your swim team, 3rd place in Sectionals(4th in Conf.) isn't exactly any better than the football team, especially given the competition. Get off your high horse. This is an Athletic Program; Martinsville residents should support and take pride in ALL sports, as it greatly improves the image of our city. Why can't you be supportive that Martinsville is committing itself to its athletic youth endeavors? Is it too much to ask that a Golf, Wrestling, or even Tennis parent be a fan of Martinsville High School's Football Program? Be supportive. Positivity goes a long way. |
| swim parent Thursday, May 12, 2011: 12:03 pm More from swim parent | Word - No one comes out to pay and watch a swim meet because it isn't promoted like football - and our ancient pool isn't big enough to hold any fans. Why don't we think about updating our pool? Take a look at the other pools in the conference - ours is the "ghetto" of the conference. I'm sure the average citizen isn't even aware when the meets are. Butler Grad - I AM confident in the swim team. Your comment regarding their sectional placing not being very good "given the competition". When was the last time you saw a meet. Ever seen Center Grove swimmers? Franklin swimmers? Talk about competition! I'd love to see the number of dollars our athletic department spreads between all the teams. I'd be willing to bet it is extremely skewed. I am supportive of all the sports - however the sports you mentioned are probably in the same boat as swimming. They have to provide their own equipment and raise lots of money to be able to compete! I would put a swimmer against ANY other athletic team member in the MHS system when it comes to dedication, commitment and physical fitness. These are kids who practice 6 days a week, have 5:00 a.m. practices 4 days a week plus afternoon practices, sometimes totaling 5 hours a day as well as being expected to maintain above a C average by their coach. I'm all for improving the football field, but it's time we support some of our other teams as well. |
| ButlerGrad Thursday, May 12, 2011: 1:26 pm More from ButlerGrad | I am not here to argue who dedicates the most valuable time to their sport. Things could get ugly, and this wouldn't be an educated discussion. I respect that those athletes put in their time, and the swim program has grown leaps and bounds through the past few years. On the other hand, spending $6-10 million on a pool isnt feasible given the current economic climate, not to mention the negative criticism that the tax base would likely bring up. I am personally not against a new pool, as it is warranted, but I don't think majority of this city would support that. As an athletic 5A program, all our sports are underfunded to a degree. Here are a list of upgrades that I can think of recently: -Soccer was able to get a pressbox. (Much Needed, yet they still need restrooms to host athletic events) -Baseball just obtained a new pressbox as well this year. -Softball has a pressbox that was built within the past 10 years. -Putting a new track, and football turf in. My point is that I truly believe that our Athletic Department works within reason to provide all of our sports with the tools necessary to achieve success. We have never been guilty of "vastly overspending," or being impratical. For this reason, I believe we should all support ALL facility upgrades as they enhance the image of our city, and it shows that the administration is committed to providing our children with the means necessary to be successful. Success varies to a degree, but if it's for our kids, isn't this an investment worth making? |
| Just observing Thursday, May 12, 2011: 1:33 pm More from Just observing | I dont think the majority of the city supported three quarters of a million dollars on a new football field either. The grass has worked fine before. Maybe at a later date but as you said, not in these economic times! |
| artie1958 Thursday, May 12, 2011: 3:07 pm More from artie1958 | Good for Martinsville Athletic Dept! The Football players also work year round, and every sport fund raises throughout the year to help keep cost down! Unfortunately for the swim team.....the pool had to be built upstairs because of the geniuses who built the High School in a swamp! Martinsville is one of very few schools left who has not upgraded their track and field! Not only our football team will benefit, but the track team, the Band, West, and East Middle School, and our little league! This will generate money for all sports! So, just because the swim team or other athletes may not benefit from the field....they will benefit from the revenue! Not everyone was, or is against the project! I do not have a child who plays sports, but am excited for the improvements to our school system! |
| outsider Thursday, May 12, 2011: 3:17 pm More from outsider | How many of our football players got full ride scholarships? Then ask those kids what they think about turf or grass. |
