"According to figures presented by Williams, businesses spend up to $167 billion annually in direct costs associated with smoking, including higher health, life and fire insurance premiums, higher worker absenteeism, lower work productivity and higher workers’ compensation rates."

Smoking has no bearing on workman's compensation rates. Workman's compensation rates are based on individual employee salary per year. So if the abesnteeism rate is lower, the salary would actually be lower (unless you are paid sick pay) therefore resulting in lower workman's compensation rates.

And while I'm on it from a business standpoint. When the stop smoing do-gooders start paying my business property tax and mortage payments, you can start governing my private business interests. How's that for an economic strategy. What's next, no smoking in my own back yard. Microchips, vehicle mileage monitoring....how many times we take a poop?

My wife of 12 years lost her battle with Small Cell Lung Cancer on April 14, 2011. Her name was Lois Carter. I my self have Asthma. I know after watching her suffer especially the last two years with her cancer that that smoking needs to be banned in all public places. I have never smoked. It is time the the people and leaders of Martinsville realize that now is a time for a smoking ban in all places that serve food and other public places even the nursing homes. We have known many years that smoking causes cancer. Will it take seeing the death of a loved one before something in done about it.
