Planning for new park shelter continues
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Liberty Thursday, July 14, 2011: 11:16 am More from Liberty | Didn't we read that the fire department wants to raise the county income taxes to use for fire department. And as we sink into a deep depression (for anyone who keeps an I on the imploding dollar)one would think wasting money on building shade in a park full of trees would put their foot down and stop these people for going through with this. I'm Lost on its meaning Peace :) |

| jon Thursday, July 14, 2011: 2:23 pm More from jon | Not at all shocking.....yet another negative comment from Liberty. For someone that has the answers to so many issues in our little town I cannot figure for the life of me why you haven't ran for mayor and actually try to fix things instead of constantly complaining!! The people who actually use the city park can easily see it is in dire need of attention. It has been for awhile but gets ignored. We have this nice swimming pool for people to swim in but the playground is falling apart to the point it could injure a child and the shelter houses are ready to crumble to the ground! |
| Liberty Thursday, July 14, 2011: 2:48 pm More from Liberty | Jon, My post was a positive statement for the county. Not sure how you take it as a negative unless you mean a few people wants the city to spend what will amount to more than a quarter of a million dollars of everyone elses money to buy a hand full a luxury Item for their personal use when the fire department is broke ? And we are just at the beginning of a deep depression. I would think that doing it would be a negative statement. I'm positive that doing it would be negative. A park is the very last thing needed by a community that is basically bankrupt and doesn't have the money to fix roads and put fires out and feed the people who are out of work. Those would be very positive things to promote. I'm very positive about that. That way we wouldn't be doing things that we are self want for our self. That's another positive thing. You see being positive is to try to counteract negative things, not being part of them. Think about it. That has a positive effect. Encouraging negative things has a negative affect and that's being negative. I'm positive, any time a small group of people want more than what they need at the negative cost of everyone else, that's negative. Happens all over the place, not just here. Peace and stay positive. :) |
| D E Chafey Thursday, July 14, 2011: 2:49 pm More from D E Chafey | In this world today it is common to hear naysayers complain about nearly everything. Constant complaining does no good but distance those folks around us, from us. Putting thoughts to good use is always best and in the case of the City Park good thoughts are always needed for progress. We citizens of Martinsville have a responsibility to be good stewards of the properties the city owns and maintains, and we do that using the taxes paid by Martinsville citizens. Now, no one wants higher taxes, but consider this, the amenities the city parks offers to potential citizens is a valuable resource and becomes an item on a list of good reasons for potential citizens to become taxpaying citizens. In the case of the parks there is no reason to raise taxes to pay for what is needed, but good reason to provide a recreation area for an expanded tax base. |
| LilaMae Thursday, July 14, 2011: 3:25 pm More from LilaMae | I agree Del, however it does a raise a question, why wasn't the money used for building maintenance as noted in the budget? The line item assigned has obviously not been put to the use it was assigned for. |
| jon Friday, July 15, 2011: 10:28 am More from jon | It seems there has been a misuse of taxpayer money for quite some time now. I understand the old fire dept building was too small and outdated, but did we need to spend..what was it....$5 million on a new one?? I will agree with you on the fact our town is broke Liberty... but I don't think it is because we don't have the money....I think its because our politicians have been running this town a little too long and are scratching each others backs with it!! I have watched this town go downhill for the last 20 years...the amount of theft and drugs are at its worst and yet nothing is done about it. I used to be proud to live in Martinsville....now all it has to offer is drugs, theft, and poverty. |
| Liberty Friday, July 15, 2011: 10:58 am More from Liberty | Jon, I agree with you. You are right on. I guess we can only put our trust in Jesus for our happiness as it should be :) Peace :) |
| Shawn Hogan Friday, July 15, 2011: 11:13 am More from Shawn Hogan | I was at the meeting Mr Lester said i don't think the park needs all of this money and the counsel voted to pay for some of the fire department equipment. If you want responsible spending vote this fall. Shawn Hogan Democrat for Mayor The city park is in sad shape. |
| jon Friday, July 15, 2011: 12:31 pm More from jon | I won't even begin to comment on Gary Lester.....he has has his seat about as long as Mr. Deckard hasn't he?? |
| Shawn Hogan Friday, July 15, 2011: 4:51 pm More from Shawn Hogan | I think he could have been longer not sure. |
| Greg Saturday, July 16, 2011: 5:31 am More from Greg | I'll pitch my two cents in here. Yes, the park is in bad shape... just like the city budget. Morgan County already has the third highest tax rates in the state, so we don't need to be raising taxes, either. Jon mentioned that the playground equipment is in bad shape, too. Just this past week, a 7 yr old little girl donated $100 to repair/replace the playground equipment. Morgan County Farmers Market (with Gary Lester on the board, I'll add) is matching her PRIVATE donation, and I'll challenge any and all businesses and non-profits in the city to do the same. Private donations (financial and in-kind)can and should be used to repair the park... not higher tax dollars, and certainly not taxes collected for other purposes and "reallocated". Libs, Del, Jon, Lila, and Shawn... ya'll interested enough to get your groups to pony up, or is this just an umm... urinating contest? |
