I don't think that we were discussing the game play...but more the coach commenting that he had no athletes. I think that was actually the point of the comments initially. Wins or losses really were not the focus. THS was supposed to be pretty good this season anyway and MHS is in somewhat of a rebuilding mode now after losing quite a few kids who played both sides of the ball and pretty much all of their line. Not to worry. They will turn it around.

Good Luck This week arties. Ill be at the game friday night. Boy this rivalry has lost it's luster. Still i think you guys have to be the favorite. Here in bloomington football is a bygone era at south anyways and the big wigs in charge in the athletics department and booster clubs dont wanna allow us to be good at football anymore. Makes me an artesian fan and i am a bhss alumn and former player. . . . Anyways we lost to a better bnl program last friday in a game ten years ago with these same players we woulda won by 2 or 3 td's. Anyways our new coach down here is a great coach but he doesnt have hardly any support.

I guess I though he should have said "We have some things to work on" not we didn't have enough athletes. We have a great group of athletes...come on Coach step up and lead them. Athletes are made. That's why you were hired.

Well when you are short on talent, then a coach has to teach fundamentals and mental toughness. You don't make mistakes and you out technique your opponent. I remember after beating Cathedral their coach reported that the Artesian's played like well programmed robots.

It is not responsible to say that to the press. You have an entire season in front of you and you embarrass your kids like that. I did not see the game, but how did the Artesian's get stopped at the 1 on their first drive? Maybe different play calling could have made a difference and with the first score the boys would have been more confident and the outcome may have been different.

You are coaching kids. When you are talking to the press, give credit to the kids and take responsibility. In practice you may handle it different, but to publicly say you don't have enough athletes....well it sounds like you may need to find a new school and the Artesian's may need to look elsewhere for a coach.

In my previous post, I intended to say "when you are short on athletes"...I see the coach made a similar comment after a scrimmage. It is like he is making excuses before the season gets started. I will never understand public statements like that.

You are 100% corret Sampson! I am not sure who is rating you, but they must not have respect for others either. When kids give up their summer and free time to represent their school, and give everything they have in a game situation, it demands the respect of the coach. These are kids that have not played in many of these positions and need to be built up....not ridiculed. Some kids cannot play well under those circumstances, or will choose to not play at all. If you have those feelings Coach, you should keep that to yourself, among the coaches and try to work with the talent that you have and give them a pat on the back...not a knife in the back! It is unfortunate that a coach and assistant athletic director would make comments such as this in a public forum. He may have ruined the season before it starts. I cannot tell you how frustrated the boys were last year and the year before to continually hear that on the radio and in the paper. Again, I know Coach does not appreciate being bashed in public about his abilities, so he should take that into consideration. Just sayin'!

How many State Championships has Martinsville ever won in football? NONE! Why,one is because we have never had a great coach and two small town politics always decides on who is on the team and who is not, who plays and who sits on the bench. Everyone in Martinsville knows it, just no one ever wants to say anything because you might hurt someone's feelings or make someone mad.

There was a great tradition built after many years of horrible football. It is true that the Artesian's have not won any state championships, but some of our teams were undefeated and did not get to participate. Who knows what might have happened. Maybe it is no consolation, but I remember fighting tooth and nail away from how to lose to Carmel when they won....and getting caught flat footed by a gadget play to Castle when they went on to win. The Artesians gave the state champion their toughest test in both those years.

Look, I don't know about the politics. I remember politics in kids baseball, but in my years at Martinsville, the best players were on the field.

If you feel that Martinsville has never had a great coach than you should be drug tested. Coach Siderwicz took a program that was total..BS, and at one point led the Arties to 38 straight wins...we cannot live in the past, but please don't post that we have never had a great coach. He is an Indiana Hall of Fame coach, and should be remembered. I will support any coach, but let's be honest....part of being a coach is taking the responsibility of not being prepared or just losing....you take the bullet for your kids....nothing positive is going to come from telling kids they are not athletic....you can tell them that the opponent is fast, quick, strong,etc...to motivate your team to be ready and perform....but please you do not tear them down.

Again, I did not see the game but why not say this:

"We were looking good, and just got stopped short on our first possession. They boys fought back putting up scores in the third and fourth quarter. Two or three plays decided this ball game and we were close to winning this battle.

We are going to review the tapes, work on a couple of things, and I believe we learned something tonight and this team is going to come back strong. I am sure the boys will welcome a rematch in the playoffs."

Now as a 15 or 16 year old boy, I think I would be a bit more motivated thinking my coach was optimistic about our opportunities.

In 1998 when B. south won their second 5A state title martinsville held us to 14 points and martinsville scored 7 in the sectionals. South anihilated every team they played that year. When i played in the early 90's at south the martinsville game was always a big game for both teams. Martinsville may not have had an early football tradition but built a good program in the 70's and 80's and 90's . I agree i hear it too much that we cant compete with the schools we play in conference indiana that are almost all over 2,400 students while south is around 1,700 where they have been for the last 20 years at least. Yet in the first 10 years of conference indiana south won conference in football 6 of the first ten years. And those schools were bigger than us back then too. Fact is when the coaching takes a downgrade they look for excuses and a losing mentality takes over and the best thing they can say is we dont have the talent. . . It is pathetic to hear that. I feel your pain Artie fans Bloomington South has that mentality surrounding thier program also in the last 7 or 8 years. But who knows what the future will bring
