If you have taken this concept to all of the local officials and they are not interested, maybe they don't think it is a good idea to use public funds in support of this event. Or maybe they don't think it's a good idea to promote a notorious gangster as a good image for the Community. Both valid reasons to say no.

Since you own the rights to Dillinger, and you stand to gain the most by this venture, why don't you ask Larry Bird and Johnny Depp to help you finance the deal? I'm sure you have their cell phone numbers on speed dial.

If it's such a great idea, you shouldn't have any troubles getting private investors on board.

You guys are missing the point. The festival in Minnesota is called "We Stopped the James Gang". The town makes GOBS of money because of it. Mr. Scalf is suggesting the same thing for Mooresville. Mr. Scalf is questioning why the town turned down the large sum of money to film Public Enemies here. The town and county could've made money from the movie studio people eating and sleeping here. He isn't suggesting making Dillinger a hero. Read the letter. He wants to call it the "crime doesn't pay festival". He is offering the town a chance to generate money WITHOUT RAISING TAXES. If he was on target with his idea about Conseco Fieldhouse why can't he be right about this? He is obviously experienced in the field of marketing since he worked for an NBA team. Give the guy some credit for knowing what he is talking about. You all act like he is some kind of uneducated, fast food worker or something. What was the last great idea you all thought up to help this area economically? We're all listening...

No one is stopping Mr. Scalf from having his festival. I say go for it! Just don't ask the taxpayer to foot the bill so that he can cash-in via his rights to the Dillenger namesake. If it's successful, Scalf can laugh all the way to the bank.

I think its a great idea if you can come up with enough private money in this mess we have of a government and an economy.
Grit you hit the nail on the head. He could:

Regadring dillinger theme:
Get one or more big gun manufacturers to invest in a world class shooting facility and hold enternational marksmanship tournaments here.

Get NRA,shotgun digest and other publications to invest in the themes which would then carry their advertisments.

Get Discovery channel to invest in a reality series located in Morgan County indiana its own shooting "reality" show and have it hosted by the Hillstrand brothers.

Regarding Wooden he could

Get the retired professional players that became wealthy after going through wooden's system to invest.

With a rolodex like that I think the sky is the limit on baskeball investers.

Hmmm, Mr. Scalf would then become the biggest taxpayer in Morgan County. I wonder who the biggest taxpayer is now?

I agree with Mr. Scalf. Mooresville had a chance to make a lot of money by letting this film be made here but the town council said "NO". Good job, guys. All they want to do is raise the taxes for the residents. I wonder if they realize that when they raise taxes they are raising theirs as well. Probably not. Gray Brothers Cafeteria draws more people than the Candy Kitchen. People could have visited the John Dillinger Museum then gone to Grays for lunch or supper. Double whammy for Mooresville in bringing in money.
When will people see that we need new members on the town council? If you want Mooresville to prosper think about who you vote for in the future. We need to clean house.

This is in response for Lassiter. You suggested some things but do you think the town council will let that happen here in Mooresville? It might bring in money for Mooresville but they don't want that- they just want to give tax abatements so the residents have to pay more in taxes.

2 cents I tend to agree with you. I was being somewhat facetious with my ideas. I am quite certain that the Mooresville Council will not want that type of image even if the money is private and not public. They have made that obvious with regards to the public enemy filming fiasco.

I've lived in Morgan County most of my life and don't know where John Dillinger's or JOhn Wooden's homes are located. Mr Scalf sounds like a very entrepeneurial guy. Even though Dillinger had a criminal past, his life story could serve as an example of what not to do. I wish you well in developing the festival. Maybe a good start would be to piggy back on the FFF or Settlers Days by offering tours etc.

I was simply sickened when I read this letter as a lifelong resident I am proud of all the wonderful and small attractions that our county has to offer further more in reference to the letter how dare you slam someone for not attending a Colts,Pacers,or Indians game. That should have nothing to do with anything.I found your letter very distastful and very selfish. Not once did I read anything about our veterans or for that matter anything encouraging about the rest of the article and other attractions that were listed.Your letter was all about PATTING YOURSELF on the back .If you do not like the way things are done then do as you say and move from our county and do the rest of the great people a HUGE favor or run for an office and see if your NEGATIVE ATTITUDE gets you anywhere.
