| arties14 Thursday, September 8, 2011: 1:16 pm More from arties14 | Not sure who is rating this low....but it is a studied fact that there are more ankle and knee injuries on turf fields than on natural grass fields. |
| Amy Friday, September 9, 2011: 2:09 am More from Amy | Shields was not injured by the turf. He was injured because he was hit hard by two defenders. He fell on his knee wrong. It's unfortunate, but it happens. If turf was so bad, NFL and thousands of other teams wouldn't have it. |
| Amy Friday, September 9, 2011: 2:13 am More from Amy | Also - why is Applegate no longer with the team? |
| Spanky Friday, September 9, 2011: 10:02 am More from Spanky | Word on the street is Applegate had a college baseball showcase (for scholarship consideration), was going to miss a football game tape review and was told by the coach don't bother returning. Don't know all the details, but, from what I can gather, these are at least the basic facts. |
| getreal Friday, September 9, 2011: 10:09 am More from getreal | If you really want to know. Beau's injury wasn't from being hit, But I wouldn't blaim it on the turf either.. This isn't the same type of turf that used to be used.. This is better than what is in Lucas Oil.... As for Applegate.. ask any player.. they'll tell you.. It was his choice ... |
| artie1958 Friday, September 9, 2011: 12:18 pm More from artie1958 | Spanky...you are correct about Applegate....he had a chance to be considered for a scholarship, and was kicked off the team for missing film! It is a fact! It was not his choice, and other players are allowed to miss if they are going to College Football games. His family did not want to lie and say he was going to a Football game, but told the truth on why he was missing Saturday morning practice. Though...other players said they were going to a College game, and went to Holiday World! (they are still on the team) Kinda funny that if a kid wants to better themselves by having opportunity, or good enough to be invited to be watched by recruiters of another sport....they should be praised, and encouraged to do well! This is what happened and this is factual.... |
| Spanky Friday, September 9, 2011: 12:43 pm More from Spanky | getreal, If you mean Applegate chose to go to the baseball showcase knowing he'd not be welcome back to football, then I can accept your explanation. If you mean this young man chose to simply quit the team, I don't believe it. If scenario #1 is a factual representation of the event, do you believe such an untimatum is reasonable? |
| artie1958 Friday, September 9, 2011: 12:46 pm More from artie1958 | He did not quit! He was asked to turn his equipment in! |
| artiefan Friday, September 9, 2011: 1:05 pm More from artiefan | The issue of "sharing athletes" is one of the most controversial and heated topics in many High School Athletic Departments. A clear cut departmental policy is not always as easy to implement as one would think. There are an infinite amount of "what ifs" to consider...i.e. Is the student athlete allowed to attend meetings, visits, etc. but not allowed to participate in athletic activity pertaining to another sport? Can the player showcase his/her talents at a one-time workout for another sport? What if the student athlete gets hurt practicing another sport while out of season? The list goes on & on. I think the real key to dealing with this matter is constant & clear communication between the athletes, coaches, parents and Athletic Department. It is a shame that our student/athletes are put into these situations. Smaller schools seem to deal with this issue much better. They HAVE to share athletes for programs to continue to exist. However, each coach wants to build their program, and make it excellent. There is no easy answer to this problem. |
| getreal Friday, September 9, 2011: 1:44 pm More from getreal | Spanky, yes that is what i was saying. He knew when he told the truth what the consequence was.. he made the choice. And as for the Sharing Athletes.. Our school is doing a great deal in the summer (which is off season for all sports) to not punish players from team to team.. But when it comes to in season and letting players go play in a game.. Your darn right they are worried about getting in juries... |
