Dillinger farmhouse could be moved

The town of Mooresville has a chance of having some History here but the people in charge won't hear of it. When are they going to wake up and see what we could have had here. The movie Public Enemy could have brought in millions of dollars but it was turned down. Isn't that par for the course? What do we have here in Mooresville to draw visitors? Let's see- we have Gray Brothers Cafeteria, it's the home of the Indiana State Flag and .......... That's all, folks. Welcome to the prosperous town of Mooresville. There is so much to see and do here. Mr. Scalf all I can say is I'm sorry we don't have the right leaders in office to open up some new things to bring tourism to this town and make some money. Good Luck in your museum, I'm sure it will do well. Whoever gets this museum will be lucky. |
| Ratcatcher Sunday, September 18, 2011: 6:34 am More from Ratcatcher | Why doesn't Quyle help Mr. Scalf with his ideas and forget about that Community Center and walking trails? Lots of towns have community centers and walking trails. This would be something different and interesting to set Mooresville apart from other towns. What a waste of a good opportunity. The guy serves it up on a silver platter multiple times only to have it dumped like garbage. But take heart, Moorevillians, there are two new restaurants coming soon and maybe they will stay in business longer than a few months. Fingers crossed on that one. |
| ConfusedAgain Sunday, September 18, 2011: 10:40 am More from ConfusedAgain | I fully understand why they don't. Really, you think we should celebrate a covicted felon? What group of NORMAL people would really want to support such a crazy idea. I applaud our City and County leadership for not entertaining this idea. |
| Ratcatcher Sunday, September 18, 2011: 4:56 pm More from Ratcatcher | I wouldn't care if Charlie Manson and Hitler both lived in that house at one time. The town should take advantage of it and make some MONEY and cut our taxes. Something good could come out of this. He even wanted to start a charity for troubled boys with some of the money so the youth of today around here wouldn't end up like his great uncle. Go back and reread earlier stories about this. And Mr. Scalf never wanted to celebrate a convicted felon. He wanted to call the festival "Crime Doesn't Pay". The people in the town where Jesse James was from have a big festival and make lots of money and they don't celebrate what he did. They call their festival "We stopped the James Gang". DUH! |
| True Grit Sunday, September 18, 2011: 7:35 pm More from True Grit | Scalph is the one who stands to gain here. He owns the rights to Dillinger and would cash-in big time at such a festival. Why does he keep asking the taxpayer to foot the bill? No one is stopping him from moving forward with this event in Mooresville or Morgan County. Does Anderson ask the taxpayer to pay for his Apple Festival? No. Does Hunter ask the taxpayer to pay for his Honey Festival? No. If there's so much money to be made here, then risk your OWN money and cash-in Mr. Scalph. DUH! |
| monroviabooks Monday, September 19, 2011: 11:33 am More from monroviabooks | Mr. Scalf - please fulfill your pledge; leave Mooresville for good and don't let the door hit you on the backside on the way out. |
| my2centsworth Monday, September 19, 2011: 2:14 pm More from my2centsworth | In response to monroviabooks- what has Mr. Scalf done to you? Do you even know him? Have you talked to him? I know him and I have talked to him and he is a nice gentleman who cares about the kids. He is wanting to show them right from wrong and when you choose wrong what happens. He is not glorifying John Dillinger, he is trying to say crime doesn't pay. I suggest if you haven't talked to Mr. Scalf then do so and find out what he is really about. |
| ConfusedAgain Monday, September 19, 2011: 3:55 pm More from ConfusedAgain | I cannot feel sorry for someone who tries to make money off of crime. Take it anywhere but this county. You might take your following with you. |
| Ratcatcher Monday, September 19, 2011: 5:42 pm More from Ratcatcher | TrueGrit So what if Scalf makes a little money at the same time the town and it's businesses do. Your comment reflects a "cut off your nose to spite your face attitude". That is childish and I would think your momma would've taught you better. |
| True Grit Tuesday, September 20, 2011: 7:58 am More from True Grit | Rat What if the festival is a total failure and the Town loses its investment? I don't have a problem with Scalph having the event, just the part where he is asking taxpayers to pay for it! Dillinger is a controversial image for any community to get behind as a whole, as proven by some of the other comments herein. What if the Klan wanted to have a festival here? This group has history in Morgan County and might attract vistors to the community. Would you suggest the County get behind this group and use taxpayer money to have a festival? Where do you draw the line, Rat? |
| Ratcatcher Tuesday, September 20, 2011: 10:46 am More from Ratcatcher | TrueGrit I would draw the line at a KKK festival, definitely. If the Crime Doesn't Pay Dillinger Days Whatever You Call It Festival is a total failure and the town loses it's investment then oh well. That is the chance you take. I would respect the town for at least giving it a try. It has worked for the town that has the James Gang festival. It's not like this is a new idea. It has already been done and done successfully somewhere else. A similar thing could work here. And what about all the tax abatements the town gives out to businesses that pack up and leave when the abatement is over or go out of business? Don't you think the town loses on those deals also? The point is why don't we think outside the box and try something different. It's always the same thing over and over again: Tax abatements for businesses and/or hiking taxes for homeowners. Aren't you sick of it?! |
| True Grit Tuesday, September 20, 2011: 12:14 pm More from True Grit | Rat, We must agree to disagree about how local government invests our tax dollars. I wouldn't trust politicians to gamble my tax money on whatever venture they think could turn a profit. Just stick to responsible spending in care of public assets, safety etc. Leave the "risky ventures" to private interest. |
