Right-to-work should be stopped

I think the boss is only interested in his own needs, what is the wage disparity? 243 to 1? Better get the troops together, the union (the people) and demand those wages. I don't think the boss is going to volunteer them. And that is why we need unions. Power to the people. |
| nannyg Sunday, January 15, 2012: 5:41 am More from nannyg | My husband got a job with Allisons a few years ago. He worked there for only a few months before he got laid off. He paid his union dues but when it came time for him to need them they couldn't help him. Also, my grandson got a job and the first thing this company did was to take out union dues even tho he couldn't get any help from them because he had to be there three months for him to be in the union. After a couple of months he lost his job. Did the union help him? NO. So, in my opinion, unions are a waste. I'll vote for the right-to-work bill. Also, this is why things cost so much to buy. People working with a union cost the citizens more money because the companies have to pay the workers higher salaries. In order for them to do that they have to sell their product for a high cost. Do you think it costs $20,000 or more to build a car? No, it's because of the unions. The company has to pay high wages so they have to get the money from somewhere. They pay for their insurance and where does that money come from? Higher cost of an automobile. |
| A Hoosier Sunday, January 15, 2012: 5:45 am More from A Hoosier | Nanny, sugar, when the automakers move production of automobiles to Mexico and pay the worker $6 a week, does the price of the car go down? |
| Greg Sunday, January 15, 2012: 10:06 am More from Greg | Hoosier, when the automakers move production of automobiles to Mexico because the labor is cheaper, do the number of jobs go up here? Your question is probably the best argument I've heard thus far FOR Right to Work. This bill isn't about removing unions, it's about not forcing employees who do NOT wish to be union to still pay union dues. It seems to me that someone with a "keep your hands off of me" Libertarian viewpoint would be opposed to forcing employees to pay into something that they don't wish to support. |
| A Hoosier Sunday, January 15, 2012: 10:55 am More from A Hoosier | Greg, I like that....keep your hands off of me. This legislation is meant to take power from the people. The power should always be with the people. Keep the group together. If you choose not to work for a union find other employment. Good talking with you yesterday. Take care. |
| Greg Sunday, January 15, 2012: 11:20 am More from Greg | But if we assume that 12% of Hoosiers are unionized, and ALL of them are opposed to Right-to-Work legislation, and then add another 12% of non-union voters sympathetic to the union cause just to help them along, we are still only talking |
| Greg Sunday, January 15, 2012: 11:29 am More from Greg | Something ate half of my post! we are still only talking about |

| Zapper Sunday, January 15, 2012: 12:03 pm More from Zapper | Thank you Hoosier, you made my point. Talk about Obama pitting classes against the other, RTW is the epitome of class warfare. Look for yourselves, the states with a RTW law average pay is 12% less than non RTW states. Is this what you want in the name of conservatism, that you and your neighbors wages be cut. I could except RTW if a union was under no obligation to represent the people who refuse to join but as the law is written, this is the argument. You get hired into a company represented be the IBEW, you sign paerwork refusing to join the union at which time you do not pay dues, but under current law the union, you don't want anything to do with, is still bound to represent you and can be sued for failure to do so. You ultra conservatives are so happy and willing to help finish desroying the middle class, that most of you belong to, but so unwilling to even entertain the thought that corporations and their leadership are consumed with greed. My view has nothing to do with taking money from the 1% and spreading it around the 99%, but if that 1% is allowed to control our Republic based soley on wealth, well I guess then that all of you who have never studied the history of corporations treatment of workers and the reason the union movement originated are just bound to repeat it. Let all the regulations be lifted, all the saftey laws, repeal the wage laws (time and a half for over 40 hours), paid vacation, etc...Do away with every gain unions have made for the average worker in the last 70 years, allow big business to rule as they will, with every decision made based on Wall St. and the elite excutives $50 million a year plus compensations, then in my opinion the middle class is doomed to extinction...and you think because your a conserative or a republican or a tea partier or whatever it won't happen to you...sit down, strap in and hold on...history will repeat itself. |
| Bluecollar Sunday, January 15, 2012: 4:18 pm More from Bluecollar | People just don't get it... Honda's plants are non-union but cars cost the same as the union makers... See my point? Remove the union, put more money in an executives pocket. Move factory to mexico cars cost the same... more money in exec's pocket. Non-union jobs can thank every union for their wages and benefits. After all, they're the ones who stood up and fought for a piece of the pie. Not a huge slice, just enough to live the dream. If unions are gone, why would a non-union shop give fair wages and benefits if nobody else is? It's quite simple folks. Like them or not, they're very important. |
| Greg Monday, January 16, 2012: 12:55 pm More from Greg | Imagine that Republican voters (clearly a majority in Morgan County) deem that since, in our humble opinion, unfettered Republican rule has been so wonderful for the county, now ALL voters in Morgan County must contribute to the Republican Party on a monthly basis, regardless of their personal political affiliation or interests. Obviously, if you have a problem with that, you are welcome to move. :-) |
| gunny Monday, January 16, 2012: 3:19 pm More from gunny | If any union member did to another union member what they collectively do to their employer, he'd have his arse locked up for extortion. |
