Right-to-work should be stopped

I hear the proponents of this bill raving up this ideal, playing on the weak minded, and proclaiming working men and women shouldn't be so called "Forced" to join a union. Quite simply if this is about the freedom to choose...then why doesn't this arbitrary piece of legislation give a man or woman the freedom TO join "individually" as well AS NOT to join? I am also curious as to why a Union would be obligated under this law to represent he/she and this said individual would receive the wages and benefits that a union negotiates for while paying absolutely nothing in membership fees. I don't expect that any organization that I pay fees to; if I were to stop paying, would continue to provide me with their goods or services. The intentions of "Right to Work" are abundantly clear. It's motivation, and monetary supporters leave little room for misjudgment; not to mention it's grossly misleading concepts of economic development. Gunny, I have a very understandable view on the definition of extortion. A group of people negotiating for their labor is not extortion. Nor any group of people that ban together e.g. Business associations, politicians, churches, homeowners associations, planning commissions, etc... legally bargaining or petitioning for something. People threaten to withdraw their support, not buy certain products, disband/remove, or write a letters to the newspaper. |

| Sunny Tuesday, January 17, 2012: 7:33 pm More from Sunny | LovesMooresville,
You're absolutely correct! Union workers want a salary varying $30k-$90k a health insurance plan, and perhaps a 3% match on their 401k investment. What a shame..... . |

heres some food for thought on that Blue collar did u see any of the japan owned company's that are building autos in the US and being non union asking for a hand out during the market crash no you didn't they are all self sufficient and don't lean to government to help them they don't have a union and there for they put that money back into the company in which there people work they don't pad there wallets like the big wigs over GM., Chrysler and Ford and we can leave Ford out of it since they were the only 1 of the 3 US union companys that didnt ask for a hand out. |
| nobodyimportant Wednesday, January 18, 2012: 8:35 am More from nobodyimportant | Redneck, you tried to make a point, but you missed the mark. It wasn't because the foreign car-makers were non-union that they didn't get bail-out money, it was because THEY WERE FIRMS FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES! And by the way, just what insight do you have in the pay structure of upper management of foreign companies? Are you trying to tell us that the reason the U.S. car companies needed a bail-out was because the top management took the money and ran? I thought somewhere in your ramblings that you thought the car companies went broke because of high union worker wages and benefits. |
| Bluecollar Wednesday, January 18, 2012: 5:08 pm More from Bluecollar | The foreign automakers didn't need a handout because they manage the business MUCH better than American automakers. Most american cars are built in 3rd world countries where they don't pay union workers yet they still had problems, because they're poor managers. Look, I realize that in some circumstances unions have done more bad than good. SOME! NOT ALL! Here's a point that was made today that to me sums it all up: If you don't wanna be forced into paying union dues this is a free country. Go somewhere else and work. According to the figures being thrown around, 90% of hoosiers are non union anyway. That means there are plenty of places to work where you don't have to pay dues! You wanna know why these people won't do that???? BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE PAY AT NON-UNION JOBS! THEY WANT TO MAKE GOOD MONEY BUT DON'T WANNA BELONG TO A UNION TO GET IT! They want benefits... non-union jobs usually don't have them. News flash people... if you bust the unions NOBODY IS GONNA MAKE GOOD MONEY |
| Moose 65 Thursday, January 19, 2012: 11:16 am More from Moose 65 | Right to work does not eliminate jobs for union workers. It allows an employee to determind if they want to pay union dues or not. If the union is losing members or money because I do not want to pay dues and use it to support my family thats is a better decision for me and those that need the extra bucks. |
| old timer Tuesday, January 24, 2012: 10:51 pm More from old timer | If unions had not abused their power they would still be 60+ percent of the work force as they were in the 1960s |
| Sunny Wednesday, January 25, 2012: 9:02 am More from Sunny | Old Timer, The national peak of union membership in the workforce was no more than just under 40% and that was in the 1950's. I suppose next you'll think that business associations never abuse their power (the power of money)...it goes both ways. Please back away from the computer and have one of the nurses take you back to your room. |
