Thank you for writing this. I know first hand that some students from Martinsville going to IU or IVY tech never say they are from Martinsville but always say Bloomington or even Indianapolis.Because they would be known from a racist or Hilljack town.

I was unaware of the long standing prejudice against Martinsville from many (not all) in Bloomington until my son attended IU in the late 80's. He made a favorable impression on his professors, however, one older female professor had a negative reaction to him when she asked where he was from and he told her. She dropped this attitude toward him when she took the time to get to know him, but I was shocked and saddened that my son met this prejudice from professors of an institute of higher learning. One that was costing us dearly for his education. One that prides itself on being enlightened. The attitude still lives on and can be seen in many of the comments sections of articles in the Herald-Times when Martinsville is mentioned, even in passing. Those that particpate is this attitude and behavior are exhibiting the same kind of prejudice they claim to abhor. Sad really.

Life long resident Martinsville and a lover of Bloomington .... sorry! Bloomington is a forward thinking and very opened minded area. Unfortunately many folks in this town are not. I got my education in Bloomington, they knew where I was from. Did not have any issues at all. Maybe because I went in with an open mind as well. I highly doubt that jealously stems from sports, are you serious? The professors of academia certainly care for more than sports! I hate to say it but there are many racists in this town, not only racists but people around these parts are not very accepting of anything out of what they perceive to be "normal". Is it better than what it used to be? Certainly! However there are still many closed minded people in this community! Until people open there minds and free their hearts it will continue! I travel to Bloomington weekly I love the people! I Love the culture! And above ALL I love the DIVERSITY! We have no DIVERSITY here! IU is not who should make the step.... I believe Martinsville needs to step up! Lets try maybe to invite in those different cultures, races, nationalities, gays, lesbians, trangenders, religions, ect. DIVERSITY is the key! Not IU!

Hey raynbo,

Instead of separating everybody into your little diversity groups, why not just say Americans.American

I am so sorry Danny....BTW Nationality means from different Nations or Countries. To clarify this for you. Not all persons presently in this country are Americans. How ever they too should be treated with respect. Also it would be wonderful if did not have to separate into groups. Wouldn't be great if everyone could be treated as a Human! Love and Light
