| MHS.1927 Monday, May 21, 2012: 11:37 am More from MHS.1927 | I disagree completely with the writer's conclusions. The city managers should minimize unnecessary spending. They should focus on identifying companies that are interested in Martinsville’s unique location along the Indianapolis-Bloomington corridor. They should then secure company commitments and letters of intent. To do this, the city managers should work with the economic development corporations of both Morgan County and the State of Indiana. Utility construction should begin only after securing formal agreements with these companies. The above snippet pretty much sums up what has been Martinsville's strategy for last 30+ years. And guess what, it has produced little results. If you talk to ANY economic development professional or site consultant, they will tell you that companies do not come to cities asking if they can put their business there. Every city worth its salt is competing against other cities to attract employers. If your city does not have shovel ready sites, you're not even considered in the site selection process that large companies go through when deciding where to locate new facilities. The annexation does not guarantee that new employers will flock to Martinsville, but it's time for Martinsville to get in the game and invest in its future! I applaud the leaders for such a bold step. The local Chamber of Commerce & County EDC both support the City's plan and so do I. |
| abathar Monday, May 21, 2012: 12:35 pm More from abathar | Companies won’t relocate simply because Martinsville has “shovel-ready” property. In fact, such property is already available nearby in Hendricks County (Plainfield), Marion County (Ameriplex Parkway), and even Morgan County (Mooresville). In all of these areas, despite the available property with Interstate access, buildings sit empty. This is the key right here. banks aren't loaning money on new building now, just try and get a loan for it and you'll understand. Businesses that are moving are doing so into existing empty buildings, not new construction' just look at the numbers! This also doesn't have to happen right now either, there is no rush. Putting all that money out in this economy and without I-69 even started around here yet as an incentive is a huge risk with all of our money. |
| newmath Monday, May 21, 2012: 2:26 pm More from newmath | Mr. Haase, you are RIGHT ON with your logic. No matter how you figure it, Washington Twp. residents property taxes will double. Those folks can not afford that. |
| fed up Monday, May 21, 2012: 2:36 pm More from fed up | Just where do sugest they put these companies? tear down our homes. There is no where to put any companies, what we need are retail stores and home improvement store, so we don't have to drive to bloomington or greenwood to buy a screwdriver, or decent places to eat.Companies don't want to come here, if you want to live where there warehouses move to plainfeild, half of there warehouses are sitting empty, I don't know how stupid deckard thinks we are, they just want our money, they don;t care about the hardships it will put on families, once and for all we don't want any part of your ill run city. |
| turtle Monday, May 21, 2012: 3:39 pm More from turtle | Sounds like the voters don't have a say in the matter, the city is going to do what they want and put hard working families struggling to get by into more debt. |

| LilaMae Monday, May 21, 2012: 6:41 pm More from LilaMae | Mr. Haase I applaud you as well as your logic. Anyone that is willing to actually look at the plan currently being pushed from all angles and provide the pros and cons associated with each issue is worthy of an ear in my opinion. To MHS 1927 - The strategy of build and they will come has long since been left by the wayside. The areas chosen for development cannot pass the soil samples to accommodate new buildings; the highschool has been sinking for years because of where it was built. If you didn't notice it is right across the highway from the East Quadrant. This is a perfect letter from Mr. Haase that details all that is wrong with this annexation plan. Our "leaders" need to recognize that annexation is the worst possible scenario for those that have put you in the seats to make these decisions. Pay attention "Voters" and act accordingly when you realize they do not have your best interest at heart. |

| jimenicholls2 Monday, May 21, 2012: 9:46 pm More from jimenicholls2 | My hat is off to Mr. Haase!! He exposed the corruption and anti-American, pro-socialist agenda of the Martinsville City council/mayor/engineer much more diplomatically than I could. Regardless of this "forced" annexation's legality, our Founding Fathers have to be rolling over in their graves. The big picture is we are being forced, literally, to pay more taxes for services we don't need or want, under false pretenses where a very few will benefit. To top it off, all of this taxation is is without representation!! We must also pressure our State legislators to correct this Statute so this travesty won't happen to the other Free Men & Women of Indiana. Just my opinion...but if you don't sign your name to your comment, the credibility of it is in question. Millions of men and women have suffered and died the likes of which most of us can't even fathom. It is not too much to ask to sign your name to some words. Join me in standing up to the local corruption, without shame or fear. Consider one of Thomas Jefferson’s many wise statements: “When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself as public property.” |
| Moose 65 Tuesday, May 22, 2012: 8:01 am More from Moose 65 | I have said before and say now this is a bad plan and only puts more money into the coffers for the city officals and employees to have a better life while the rest of the people struggle to pay their bills and some will move out. Mr Haase has hit the nail on the head. What company in their right mind would build here with the issues stated. Besides I feel when I-69 goes through here, Martinsville will be bypassed for years until the areas around Indianapolis are loaded. There is almost nothing being built on 37 South. NOW the city needs to understand this annexation try is not over as the citizens of these areas are getting ready for a major fight to tell you NO. |
| tlh Tuesday, May 22, 2012: 10:42 am More from tlh | LilaMae; You stated "Our "leaders" need to recognize that annexation is the worst possible scenario for those that have put you in the seats to make these decisions. Pay attention "Voters" and act accordingly when you realize they do not have your best interest at heart." Sorry to point out the obvious here but I am one that voted them in their seats and very proud of them for taking on this hot political suicide topic. As for "annexation is the worst possible scenario...", I really think you must be speaking about those who don't want it and they didn't "vote you in the seats to make these decisions." but if it goes through they will have that opportunity. Maybe more will get involved in coming to council meetings and then discover just how much this administration does have our best intrest at heart. Taxes, utilities, health care, and many other things are just going to keep going up for the administration as well as everyone elses so why not become a team and have a common goal instead of bickering amoung ourselves?. I propose doing away with the 2 party system and go with the Golden Rule plan God has in mind. Love one another. Just sayin..... |
