Guest Column: City planners should rethink annex, business parks
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Ifyouaskme Tuesday, May 22, 2012: 12:34 pm More from Ifyouaskme | I have believed from day one that this plan of the City of Martinsville to annex these residents into the city is nothing but a scam to help the city pay for all of their falling apart streets , water and sewer lines and everything else that is going wrong!I applaud Mr.Wayne Haas for telling it like it is, he is absolutly correct with all his facts! The city government knows this and still think they can pull the wool over the people who live in these areas who already have their own wells, city water and expensive septic systems and do not need the City intruding on their lives . The city built a new water tower off of Burton Lane 2-3 years ago and yet all the fire hydrants that were installed have been covered and not in use as the new tower has a problem and cannot be utilized!!!The idea of taking away the Washington Twp. Fire Dept. from this area and the City having to build another one in the annexed area and put in the uneeded sewer lines and send their broken down trash trucks out is another idiotic plan!!! Where in this floodplain quik sand area would they put these " Shovel Ready " building sites??? Martinsville is NEVER going to be a Brownsburg, Avon , Plainfield or even Mooresville!!Anyone of these City Government people who think so must have their heads in the Quicksand!! I recently went to 4 different places of business looking for Green Pepper plants and then again yesterday 4 differnt places looking for cement stepping stones , both times there were none to be found!!! A Lowes would have been nice but I think they just decided against Martinsville because of the soil for one reason. It should be against the Law to be able to force annexation onto these residents just to satisfy the City Planners pipe dreams and to take their money to help the City with all of its problems!!! |
| STANDING BYE Tuesday, May 22, 2012: 1:32 pm More from STANDING BYE | IF YOU ASK ME: you are so correct! never can one find something so simple in Martinsville and then you have to drive to Greenwood/Bloomington or Mooresville to get what you need. Same thing on eating establishments....nothing but fast foods..promises promises is all they ALL gave when they ran for office...empty promises. As i stated before, this one horse town will never amount to anything as long as we keep electing these same ones to the council and govt offices here. Even down and out for years North Vernon, has growth of business/industry and population. |
| LilaMae Tuesday, May 22, 2012: 1:34 pm More from LilaMae | Wow TLH Really? - I guess we could all get in a big circle and start singing Kumbaya and then everything will be all pink and roses. Jeez - no wonder we have these issues. Again, WOW! |

| Danny Stewart Wednesday, May 23, 2012: 5:48 pm More from Danny Stewart | I was wondering, since we still havr 17 years to pay on the new fire station, now having to pay for two buildings, and everything rlse, how we are supposed to pay for the bonds for this annexation, which after intrest and fees, will cost around 20 million. How much would the annual payments be and how many years we will have to pay on these bonds. I know these are questions that an ignorant hick aren't supposed to know about, but this one does. |
| Moose 65 Wednesday, May 23, 2012: 7:31 pm More from Moose 65 | Danny I believe the answer is, maybe our grandkids will pay it off. I'm sorry I forgot something else will be added and it never will be paid off. When will we get people that know how to run the government small or large size. Also If you are running against annexation and bad local, state and federal government, You just might win in November if you have a loud enough voice |
| Danny Stewart Thursday, May 24, 2012: 4:49 am More from Danny Stewart | After attending last nights meeting, I have come to the undeniable conclusion that this mayor, this administration and this council, and everyone else invovled with putting this project together, have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Their attitude is that of just build and they will come. The contempt that Holloway has towards those opposed to this was on clear display. They have no marketing plan nor any financial plan in place. Admiting they don't even have any idea how much this will cost. On top of that, the attorney tried to say that the economy works differently in Massachusetts than it does here. I would relate this to the old snake oil salesmen that used to travel the old west. Selling potions that were useless. Barnham would surely be proud of Deckard. |
