That sucks. Hopefully the Mayor will step in and do the right thing here. Officer Richards should be ashamed. A warning was all that was needed here.

Although I agree he should probably have been issued a warning or issued one ticket, but he was fallowing the law that has been in force for a number of years and that is you can't haul people in the back of your truck. If the pick up was hit by another vehicle we may be saying how many in the hospital and why don't the police do their job.

The law is the law, The coach knew better, everyone knows you have to wear a seatbelt or you could get a ticket. I feel this officer was just doing his job.....

I took my team to the scoop about 3 weeks ago like this and talking to other coaches we all had assumed that it was okay and yes I know that it is against the law for kids to be in the back of the truck. This has happened for many years but of course times do change. Officer Richards was doing his job as he saw fit and with his line of work you live by your decisions. I'm fine with that even though I disagree with 12 citations but that is just my personal opinion as I'm sure people would do my job differently than I do. Mr Harmon shows his lack of class and proficiency of childish behavior in the video at then end. I am for allowing this to continue as it is a Martinsville childhood tradition but I'm sure this man will do something that takes the spotlight off the issue and unto himself which will create a mess out of a small situation that can be easily resolved. I'm hoping the mayor and/or city council will find a way to allow this to continue but if not, we can ride in different cars to "The Scoop."

The coach in question here is my best friend and more like a brother to me. I will say this, his intent was to show his youngest son's team a good time. Many of you have said, that he broke the law and I would guess that is true. I can tell you this guy would never put any kid in harms way. This man has coached for years, with one thing in mind, helping the young kids out. He is a GREAT FATHER, Coach, and Friend to many! Officer Richards had several choices in front of him that day and in my opinion and ONLY MY OPINION, he made the wrong one. If the tickets stand, they will be paid. However, my respect along with many other for the Martinsville Police Department will be all but gone. You did your job Officer Richards, Great Job!

So why doesn't he go sit at the schools and write a ticket for EVERY kid on EVERY school bus? As far as I know there are NO SEATBELTS on school buses! What if they have a wreck? Sounds like if the shoe fits....

More from the nanny-state, big government do-gooders. It's likely that the parents approved of this method of transportation. It's also likely that this coach was being extra careful transporting these kids the short distance to get ice cream. This has been done for years. I've done it. I see nothing wrong with it. It's fun for the kids.

If he were going 75 mph on the interstate, maybe you could say that was reckless.

What has happened to Liberty? It is slowing being legislated out of existence. You cannot legislate away all risk no matter how hard you try.

Maybe 12 citiations was a bit much but I commend the officer for doing his job and putting the safety of the kids first. Mr. Harmon clearly needs a hobby.

The R-T would do well to be less of a vassal for Ryan Harmon.

It is the law yes.... a warning would have done the job......maybe you should work as hard at getting all the thieving crackheads, meth users, and heroin junkies off our streets. Of course you all would actually have to "work" at that!

Harmon is an ex trooper who drives over motorcycles and then runs away from his responsibility to stand tall for his transgression. How he has the audacity to be critical of Richards who is attempting to be a responsible officer and enforce the laws on the books shows he is an idiot. Harmon you had your chance and blew it. Now crawl under a rock and get lost.
