Agree that Richards has the athourity, but why not #1) just have the children get on the sidewalk & call parents..#2) Let coach call the ballfeild to bring over some vans to pick them up or #3)They were only 5 blocks away from ballfeild, so let them walk back!! I know that as an officer, you make a traffic stop and your responsible then for their saftey,, Just my thinking that any of the 3 top options with a warning, would have been enough!! But 12 tickets??

Long time reader first time writer. I am a paramedic in Martinsville. I have been on several serious accidents in my 11 years of service, unfortunately some involving children. I have to say that I'm finally glad this issue has came to light. I have seen first hand children thrown from the bed of a pick up truck. Back in mid 2000's there was a truck heading out of town on 44, 6 occupants total, ranging in ages from 12 to 18. Three kids (12-16) were riding in the bed of the truck, when the vehicle swerved to avoid a deer the vehicle lost control and rolled, ejecting all but 1 occupant. I will never forget the sight of all those kids lying on the ground, especially the ones who were riding in the bed of the truck which received the worst injuries. I have also seen a child (6) who wasn't properly restrained in the back seat, ejected from the car when it rolled. This accident occurred at less than 30mph. Until you see these accidents for yourself and see the pain in these kids eyes you will never truly know how we feel as emergency workers. Every time I see a kid not restrained or riding in the bed of a pick up truck I remember that dreadful day on 44. It takes just one unattivitve driver to make a fun post game celebration into the worst day a parent could have. I will never forget the pain in the parents eyes when they found out that one of their children had died, especially in a preventable accident. I'm sure when Officer Richards wrote those tickets he probably had some of the same memories as me. All he could think about is saving 10 innocent children who didn't realize the danger that they were in. Please buckle your children up and never let them ride in the back of a truck. Hug you children and tell them how much you love them, you never know what could happen. It may be the last time you have with them.

.....and its a good thing the people video taped the whole incident or Richards would surely made false statements that he had been threatened by them and went for a felony conviction. He doesn't like being called names. Do you Richards ? You lieing P.O.S.

I personally know this coach and he would do nothing to hurt any of these kids. I understand that he may be careful and other drivers may not be, but the speed limit is 15 mph though the square and 30 mph on Morgan Street. It was not like he was going 60 mph on the highway. I agree with several people who stated, why aren't school buses pulled over then carrying children with no seat belts.

These kids were not going on the highway or a curvy, hilly road. They were traveling 5 mins to the Inside Scoop. And their parents knew they were in the truck, so why blame just the coach. I also believe that if you are going to do it for one, do it for all. There were several trucks with kids in the back all day at the scoop and no one else got stopped. I think a warning would have been fine in this case. I also agree that Ryan Harmon should not have spoke to the officer the way he did. Yes the officer was doing his job, but he brought that to a personal level, which was uncalled for.

The law is the law. If one of those children would have been injured, the city, the coach, Martinsville Little League could all be sued. It's unfortunate that this one particular coach was singled out because we know this happens all the time. However, times change and laws change. What was acceptable behavior in the past, has now been ruled illegal. Those 10 boys may have been saved from an impending tragedy. I'll bet the boys are less upset about this than the parents...

BUT M-V PARENT IF at 15 or 30mpg some drunk coming off a side street and NOT seeing the stop sign or the truck and slamed into it and a kid got hurt would you be the first parent to ask for changes? I respect what has happened in the past after a game and seeing the fun those kids had in riding in the back of a pick up but times and laws have changed. Do we need a death of a child to rethink this? Yes I think the officer could have wrote a warning and had the parents pick them up and I'm sure something on the tickets will change.

M-ville parent: I would like to teach you about kinematics. Kinematics is a branch of dynamics that deal with aspects of motion apart from considerations of mass and force. Let's say you have a baseball team riding in the back of a truck, that truck is traveling the speed limit at 30mph. Another similar size vehicle is traveling the same speed and they hit head on. The combined speed is now 60mph (highway speed). The people in the bed of the truck are now being ejected at 60mph! Lets say that the truck carrying the team is traveling at 15mph and the other vehicle is traveling at 30mph (the speed limit). They crash, the combined speed is 45mph. Hitting the pavement at 45mph can be fatal. Remember the fall or ejection doesn't kill you, it's the sudden deceleration at the end that does. It doesn't take that much force to kill you when you strike your head against a dense object. Both vehicles can be traveling at 5mph thats all it takes.

I'm with Ron Schoolcraft on this one. By the way, if you don't use your name when commenting, your comments are suspect, at best. Anonymity is perceived as cowardice.
I digress...Just imagine, with annexation we will get a bigger martinsville bureaucracy/government and police dept! We need more brave citizen journalists like Harmon exposing the corruption of all public servants, because let us not forget whom they work for and where their paychecks come from.

Harmon I'm sure your Dad is hoping you move out of Morgan County soon. You are a joke. You are tarnishing your parents name. They would never have treated people the way you have since you left the scene of an accident which would have charged you with OWI. You are really an enbarrassment to this entire community. From all is us, Please sneak your way out of this County, never to be heard from again, PLEASE!!
